Last night, the @longbeachcity council unanimously approved the plan to use both County and City funding to buy the @lbrescuemission site on Anaheim to create a permanent site for interim shelter beds. (You might remember this was also the former @westcoastchoppers location.)

I am grateful to have a partner like Long Beach in the work to address the homelessness crisis. I applaud both Mayor @rexrichardsonlb and Councilmember @maryzendejaslb for their leadership on this project. And I am proud to have secured $6.5 million in Measure H funds to make this purchase possible.

Councilwoman Suely Saro Invites you to Remembrance and Renewal: Honoring Cambodian New Year and Cambodian Genocide Remembrance Day by Celebrating Cambodian American stories.

The Cambodian New Year Festival, which is also known as Sangkranti, is also celebrated by Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and some part of India. It is a three-day celebration and this year it begins on April 14 and ends on April 16.

However, April 17, 1975 marks the day in which the lives of Cambodians everywhere were forever tragically changed when the Khmer Rouge marched into Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia, and evacuated the entire population. April 17th, 2021 marks 46 years of a tragic event in human history, the fall of Phnom Penh that led to the Cambodian Genocide. Thousands of refugees, survivors of the genocide, found homes all over the world in hopes of rebuilding what had been lost. Cambodian Genocide Remembrance Day honors the lives lost, the survivors and their descendants for their courage, resiliency, and contributions to the City of Long Beach.

Our Remembrance and Renewal interview series, shares the inspirational stories of those who inherited the traumas of war and how they continue to hope, to dream, to build, thrive, and celebrate as Cambodian Americans.

Featuring Stories & Performances by: Sokunthary Svay | Richard Pheany Chey | Vincent Puth | G Funk Supreme | Sovankesa Som | Sovannahry Em | Commander Kun Chap | Major Marada Phillips | Sergeant Gorntiar So | Van Tan | Naran Tan | Moulino Tan | Serina Lim | Charles Song | Venerable Jard Kai | Rithy Hanh

Suely Saro is the first Cambodian American elected official in Long Beach, California.

She was born in a refugee camp in Thailand as her parent’s fled the war ridden country of Cambodia. Along with her family, Suely reached America and settled their lives in California. At a young age she saw first hand the hardship and the relentless struggle that immigrants endured to put food on the table and survive. She began to realize that other minority communities in California were burdened with the same inequalities that her immigrant community faced.

She began fighting for equity for working families, immigrants and women across her community. Suely Saro began fighting for fair wages and better working conditions for janitors at SEIU and also became the first Cambodian American Executive Director of Khmer Girls in Action, an advocacy group that develop leadership skills in young women and men to improve their schools and their community. She also is a member of the Health Access Project at Asians Americans Advancing Justice Los Angeles to provide education, build coalitions and conduct advocacy on the Affordable Care Act. Suely also co-founded Women for Women Foundation which has helped over 700 women with disabilities and increase their economic security.
