BACK IN STOCK: BABY BLUE BENZO BY SARA CWYNAR!

After selling out in just a couple of weeks, we’re happy to announce that the second edition of Zolo Zine 04: BABY BLUE BENZO by Sara Cwynar is now available at www.zolo.press.

This zine collects materials from Sara Cwynar’s 2024 Baby Blue Benzo, a video and suite of photographs. Its title, compressing benzodiazepine with a certain rare and expensive Mercedes Benz, draws our attention across a field of contemporary cultural products flouncy with yearning and yet curdling with stray anxiety. The zine, as you might have noticed, is not bound but is instead, a sheaf of images folded at their midsection and nestled around one another. — Lucas Blalock.

We are proud to announce that Mimi Ọnụọha, Nickola Pottinger, Trisha Baga, and Sara Cwynar are the recipients of the 2026 Artists & Mothers Grant. Each artist will receive $25,000 to support one year of childcare expenses with the provider of their choice.

This year, we received an extraordinary number of applications from a remarkable and diverse pool of artists—a powerful reminder of both the urgent need for this support and the many artist-mothers balancing the demands of caregiving with sustaining a creative practice.

We are grateful to our jurors, Aimé Iglesias Lukin, Director and Chief Curator of Visual Arts at Americas Society, and Lanka Tattersall, Laurenz Foundation Curator at The Museum of Modern Art, for the thought and care they put into the review process.

This year also marks an important milestone for Artists & Mothers. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we have expanded from three grants to four, enabling us to provide direct support to even more artist-mothers. While we are proud of this growth, the need continues to far exceed the resources available, underscoring our commitment to sustaining and expanding this work in the years ahead.

We extend our deepest gratitude to our donors, partners, jury members, and community. Every contribution has helped make these grants possible.

Sara Cwynar 'Baby Blue Benzo' ✨

Preview: Wednesday 22 April, 6-9pm

The Approach is pleased to present Baby Blue Benzo by Sara Cwynar, her second exhibition at the gallery. Presented in the main space, Baby Blue Benzo (2024) is a major video installation shot on both digital and 16mm film, shown at a monumental panoramic scale. In parallel, a selection of accompanying photographs are exhibited in The Annexe set against wallpaper designed by the artist.

Baby Blue Benzo (2024) begins with the Mercedes Benz 300SLR, the most expensive car ever sold at auction (2022, 135 million euros) – and expands this object into a research film about the arbitrariness of value and the role of photography in capitalism as a generator of desire. Cwynar incorporates filmed representations of herself in the Benz, of hired models and crew, and of friends and collaborators like the graphic designer Tracy Ma. This amalgamation of images, all shown at varying scales, is unveiled in a continuous horizontal scroll across an extra-wide screen, a new animation style that Cwynar developed for the film.
