Day 7 of #SegaGenesisSeptember.

Today I’m digging deep into the dungeon, for a hidden treasure. The start of the Shining series of games. Many may know the Shining Force games, but the game that started it all was Shining in the Darkness, by Climax.

Before the strategy Shining Force games, Shining in the Darkness was a turn-based dungeon crawler RPG. Completely in a first person perspective.

The story starts out as Dark Sol, embarks on controlling the land of Thornwood. To begin his evil quest, Dark Sol invades the castle of Thornwood and captures Princess Jessa. With the kingdom of Thornwood in complete disparity, you the son of Sir Mortred have been called by the king and his council to brave the forbidden labyrinth.

After the run in with Dark Sol in the kings castle, the king bestows some coin and sends word to the town to aid in the quest.

Nostalgia time : Shining in the Darkness started off as a weekend rental. Hungry for more RPG action on the Sega Genesis after Phantasy Star II, and Sword of Vermillion. What captured me about Shining in the Darkness was the theme and art style. An almost 80’s Disney medieval theme cartoon look. All the characters had an animated life in the world. The first person style drew you into the world, and the first person dungeons. The dungeons felt at home, probably due to playing Phantasy Star on the Sega Mastersystem.

Rented Shining in the Darkness 2 weekends in a row, and was able to get about halfway through the game. But on the third rental, my save was overwritten between rentals. So had to purchase the game so that I could grind through this adventure.

Fast forward a bit, and hanging out with my close friend @cybr_goth in the early 90’s. The topic of Sega RPG’s came up, and Shining in the Darkness. I had finished the adventure, and @cybr_goth asked to borrow and replay the game. Well, after about a week, met up at his place and before hitting up our local arcade, Shining in the Darkness was playing in his CRT, but on the coffee table were pages and pages of graph paper. He had graphed the entire labyrinth. Traps, treasures, keys, story points, everything! I was completely in awe!

Punching and kicking the way to #fightinggamefriday with a huge surprise from my gaming friend from several decades ago and to this day, and beyond. From first meeting on a match of Street Fighter 2 Championship Edition in our local arcade (which he double perfected me with Guile at the time), and we still reminisce of the classic age. Big thanks to @cybr_goth!!!

So for #fightingstickfriday as well is the Street Fighter V Arcade Fight Stick TES+ for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 by Mad Catz. A pristine and sharp stick. Everything is super responsive.

Currently don’t own a console copy of Street Fighter V and have limit playtime with the game. Just some basic sessions in game-conventions and at a few retro arcades and a PC copy of V. But for me to put some experience through the arcade stick, hooked up the PlayStation 3, and have a digital copy of my favorite Alpha game, Street Fighter Alpha 2. Got everything piped in the Retrotink for fine tuned RGB.

The Arcade Stick took all the commands as needed. Moves were flawless.

A bit of a stealth drop, but Tokyo Xtreme Racer (2025) by Genki on Steam hit full release. A game series since the Sega Dreamcast that I love!

Earlier this year the game has been in early access, and with a ton of content. Grinding during early access, I was able to complete what was release up to that point. Returning and the game, story, and world has expanded multiple times of what I had played before. Hopping back into the seat of my Wangan missile, my JZA80/Mark IV Toyota Supra. Still a little monster, but now way back in the pack of Tokyo’s Hashiriya’s.

Grinding was able to build the engine more, and tune the car a lot. Also built up the perk system to combat some bosses. This route really grew the wallet and unlocked a lot of added bonuses. Finally able to afford one of my favorite cars in game and real world, the Nissan R35 GTR. With the disposable CP, built and absolute killer.

With the funds flowing in now, my side quest with to build some of my current and past real life cars. My Z33 and Z32.

Even though atm my R35 is my choice weapon, I’m eyeing a NSX Type S (NC1). The grind continues. 😅

To me, this is one of those games that I know is a favorite in my library. A game that you tell yourself that, “ok take on 1-2 battles and take a break.”. But two hours later your still going. Feels like the old days playing classic RPG’s. Totally engrossed.😄

It’s #fightinggamefriday by @king_lizzard and @thatretroperson and in the gameroom, the sights and sounds of the yesteryears. The game that took tokens and the gaming world by storm, Street Fighter 2!

This post I would like to highlight one of my closest friends in my video gaming life. Someone that if I was writing an autobiography of my life in gaming, would hold many many chapters through the 16bit era all the way to present day. The person that not only perfectly destroyed me in Street Fighter 2 when I first met and challenged, but also taught and showed me the fundamentals and tech back in the day. 🙏🏼 Thank you @cybr_goth!!

So this Friday evening, like so many early 90’s Friday nights back at our arcade, The Palm Bay Greens, I’ve fired up the classics.

From the SNES and Genesis home ports, all the way to the arcade originals.

From the early days of marking next match with a token on the control panel, to hustling some loud cocky players, and getting a group together for match after match of tournaments.

Not only did Street Fighter 2 change the arcade landscape and gaming scene, but it changed lives. It brought @cybr_goth and my life together with a friend that has lasted well over 30 years. Here’s to you brother! 🤜🏼🤛🏼

Warsong, by Masaya Games for the Sega Genesis has become 34 years of age, released as Langrisser in Japan.

A game style that back in the 80’s-90’s was a gaming tend mostly on computers of the time. A tactical strategy game. As Prince Garett of Baltia you must recruit, ally, and setup forces to defend and attack the Dalsis Empire.

Along the way, you’ll find aid with other classes, and more ways to advance.

The game plays much like a tabletop board game where you move and position troops. Once you or your enemy finishes placements, attack can occur. Terrain, and landmarks can aid or effect battle outcomes.

Warsong was a game I came across when visiting my fellow gaming friends. I recall them grinding through Warsong, and a few times become very animated when a scenario didn’t go as planned 😅. During this time I wasn’t well versed in the strategy genre, so I was more of an audience watcher. Wasn’t until later in the PC landscape that I dwell into the role playing strategy games.

Warsong only had its solo release, but its series Langrisser continued on in the Japanese gaming scene back then, and even more recently.

A happy 34th anniversary to Warsong, and Langrisser in Japan.
