Day 7 of #SegaGenesisSeptember.

Today I’m digging deep into the dungeon, for a hidden treasure. The start of the Shining series of games. Many may know the Shining Force games, but the game that started it all was Shining in the Darkness, by Climax.

Before the strategy Shining Force games, Shining in the Darkness was a turn-based dungeon crawler RPG. Completely in a first person perspective.

The story starts out as Dark Sol, embarks on controlling the land of Thornwood. To begin his evil quest, Dark Sol invades the castle of Thornwood and captures Princess Jessa. With the kingdom of Thornwood in complete disparity, you the son of Sir Mortred have been called by the king and his council to brave the forbidden labyrinth.

After the run in with Dark Sol in the kings castle, the king bestows some coin and sends word to the town to aid in the quest.

Nostalgia time : Shining in the Darkness started off as a weekend rental. Hungry for more RPG action on the Sega Genesis after Phantasy Star II, and Sword of Vermillion. What captured me about Shining in the Darkness was the theme and art style. An almost 80’s Disney medieval theme cartoon look. All the characters had an animated life in the world. The first person style drew you into the world, and the first person dungeons. The dungeons felt at home, probably due to playing Phantasy Star on the Sega Mastersystem.

Rented Shining in the Darkness 2 weekends in a row, and was able to get about halfway through the game. But on the third rental, my save was overwritten between rentals. So had to purchase the game so that I could grind through this adventure.

Fast forward a bit, and hanging out with my close friend @cybr_goth in the early 90’s. The topic of Sega RPG’s came up, and Shining in the Darkness. I had finished the adventure, and @cybr_goth asked to borrow and replay the game. Well, after about a week, met up at his place and before hitting up our local arcade, Shining in the Darkness was playing in his CRT, but on the coffee table were pages and pages of graph paper. He had graphed the entire labyrinth. Traps, treasures, keys, story points, everything! I was completely in awe!

😌 memories!

A new week and a new acquisition. Another Electronic Gaming Monthly issue I had in my possession in December of 1992. One of which I paged through many many times. This magazine was more of a catalog, with the amount of information, review, previews and thoughts of gaming and tech coming in 1993.

EGM issue 41 December 1992.

Featuring Sonic 2 preview. Street Fighter II Turbo coming to the arcades. Rumors of Street Fighter 3 (way too early 🤣). Road Rash II. The news the Nintendo and Sony were designing a CD-ROM console. The Sega CD was just around the corner, and the 16bit generation was hot and the gaming scene was just building!

Found this factory sealed copy and I was shocked. As much as I wanted to just keep it in the cellophane, my nostalgia was overpowering. Cutting the plastic and the printed ink smell was released from 1992. On top of that, the untouched static was zapping me back to a treasured time.

I’m glad to relive the time of physical gaming information media. An art that is not what it used to be. With everything at a fingertip and AI able to pull information in seconds, the classic art form is faded from the present.

Happy to hold a piece of gaming history, a snap shot of a time of wonder and excitement every month.

Punching and kicking the way to #fightinggamefriday with a huge surprise from my gaming friend from several decades ago and to this day, and beyond. From first meeting on a match of Street Fighter 2 Championship Edition in our local arcade (which he double perfected me with Guile at the time), and we still reminisce of the classic age. Big thanks to @cybr_goth!!!

So for #fightingstickfriday as well is the Street Fighter V Arcade Fight Stick TES+ for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 by Mad Catz. A pristine and sharp stick. Everything is super responsive.

Currently don’t own a console copy of Street Fighter V and have limit playtime with the game. Just some basic sessions in game-conventions and at a few retro arcades and a PC copy of V. But for me to put some experience through the arcade stick, hooked up the PlayStation 3, and have a digital copy of my favorite Alpha game, Street Fighter Alpha 2. Got everything piped in the Retrotink for fine tuned RGB.

The Arcade Stick took all the commands as needed. Moves were flawless.

Again, THANK YOU @cybr_goth! Next time you in the area, the gameroom will be on fire!

Today it’s time to kick back and turn the pages of 16bit Sega Nostalgia with The Sega Mega Drive & Genesis Encyclopedia. Available on Amazon (not affiliated). This Encyclopedia covers all the licensed releases in Japan, Europe, and the USA. Includes chapters for the Sega CD, and 32X.

Packed with information on each game, fun facts, and hidden content on some titles.

The screenshots, and write ups all take me back. A couple reviews I can say I honestly didn’t know existed.

Sadly forgot where I saw this featured, but once I saw it, found it on Amazon, I had to get it.

Just like the games, this book is a 16bit Time Machine.

For #throwbackthursday I’m looking back at the early days of the Sega Genesis. Could be considered a “forgotten” Capcom IP. Forgotten Worlds, by Capcom/Sega. Another of Capcom’s arcade classics ported over by Sega.

A shmup in a since, but instead of a decked out ship, you take control of two classic buff 80’s dudes, out to save their world from destruction. One of the main features of Forgotten Worlds is the rotating aiming. Each character can spin in 360 degrees and take out hazards from all directions. In a two player coop game, both players can get in each other’s space and create an energy field that boost fire power. Fire power can all be purchased from hidden shops in levels. Capcom’s early in games currency, Zenny is found in Forgotten Worlds too.

This game was introduced to me by my neighbor that showcased the Sega Genesis in late 89’. Seeing it for the first time, I was told Forgotten Worlds was like “flying Contra”. Not really a solid comparison in my opinion, but the characters aesthetic kinda fell into the theme. At the time, I never saw the arcade original, so the game was a new experience.much much later I did run into the arcade game, and the spin controller made for a more precise control. Also, the port to the Sega Genesis was very faithful for the time.

Forgotten Worlds is a game that once in a blue moon I see pop up. Whether in a Capcom collection, or a mention. Shoot, a visit from @cybr_goth a couple years back, and we rolled through the game. Oddly, I’ve wondered why Forgotten Worlds didn’t expand on the game with a squeal, etc.

One of those Capcom arcade classics that captured the time.

Just made aware that 35 years ago, one of the biggest game series was born. Released in Japan on March 7th of 1991, and the USA just days later. The gaming icon, Street Fighter 2 (The World Warrior) by Capcom.

Without a doubt, Street Fighter 2 reshaped the arcade scene and put the Vs fighting game genre on the map. In the early 90’s, any real arcade had a Street Fighter 2 cabinet or 3, and even gas stations and beyond.

The very first time I saw Street Fighter 2 The World Warrior was waiting at a local movie theater. Arriving very early for a movie, and having to sit in the lobby waiting for the staff to clean the theater. In the waiting area were 8-10 arcade cabinets. 3 I recall were Double Dragon, RoboCop, and Street Fighter 2. Not having an extra quarter at the time I merely watched the attraction demos. Street Fighter 2 really caught my attention with large character sprites, and the smoothness of the gameplay.

Months later at my local mall, the arcade got Street Fighter 2 and when I saw it, a crowd was covering the machine. Waiting for a while, I finally got my chance. Selecting Blanka for my first character, I used the button mashing technique 😅. The random punches and kicks found their marks, and was able to zap the opponent, but that only got me a round and then I received the KO.

As time and visits went, I played as Chun Li, and then migrating over to Guile. Guile was the first character that was able to beat the CPU all the way to the end credits.

As time went by the game just got more and more attention, and word of mouth was a home port was coming, and upgrade to the arcade game (Championship Edition).

I can truly thank Street Fighter 2 on many levels. From the friends I met through the game, and the memories of the opponents that got pretty upset at being stomped. From playing the game in arcades across the country, and in places you wouldn’t think a cabinet would be at. I credit Street Fighter 2 in shaping much of my gaming lifestyle.

And to this day, a game that I can revisit and still feel some of the retro-rush.

Just the last few hours of 2025, and looking back with the #top9 of my 2025.

In gaming, 2025 exceeded my expectations. From new releases, new IP’s and returns from old IP’s. The retro gaming scene still going strong and so much more. Announcements for 2026 in gaming are looking promising.

Looking back 2025 brought me a lot of enjoyment. I’m looking forward to see what 2026 has for us #instagamer.

Also threw in just some of my favorite moments in 2025.

#happynewyear everyone!

A bit of a stealth drop, but Tokyo Xtreme Racer (2025) by Genki on Steam hit full release. A game series since the Sega Dreamcast that I love!

Earlier this year the game has been in early access, and with a ton of content. Grinding during early access, I was able to complete what was release up to that point. Returning and the game, story, and world has expanded multiple times of what I had played before. Hopping back into the seat of my Wangan missile, my JZA80/Mark IV Toyota Supra. Still a little monster, but now way back in the pack of Tokyo’s Hashiriya’s.

Grinding was able to build the engine more, and tune the car a lot. Also built up the perk system to combat some bosses. This route really grew the wallet and unlocked a lot of added bonuses. Finally able to afford one of my favorite cars in game and real world, the Nissan R35 GTR. With the disposable CP, built and absolute killer.

With the funds flowing in now, my side quest with to build some of my current and past real life cars. My Z33 and Z32.

Even though atm my R35 is my choice weapon, I’m eyeing a NSX Type S (NC1). The grind continues. 😅

To me, this is one of those games that I know is a favorite in my library. A game that you tell yourself that, “ok take on 1-2 battles and take a break.”. But two hours later your still going. Feels like the old days playing classic RPG’s. Totally engrossed.😄

Day 9 of #septembershmups and I had to go back in time a bit for a #shmup that when I saw and played for the first time, was shocked and amazed! Today my #shmupoftheday is Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire on the NEC PC Engine CD-ROM2.

Sapphire as most call it, is a marvel on the PC-Engine CD(mini). Utilizing the expanded data of the arcade card, Sapphire demonstrated software scaling and polygon like graphics in game. The CD storage hosted anime cutscenes and voice dialogue.

To go along with the shocking visuals for the time, was a screaming neoclassical type metal soundtrack. The guitar player(s) are metal gods with the speed they are playing.

Playing Sapphire back in the day made me realize why the NEC PC Engjne was such a powerhouse in Japan. The PC Engine back then was known for its #shmups and playing Sapphire is a testament of its #shmup legacy.

For #fightinggamefriday by @king_lizzard and @thatretroperson it’s time to fire up the Super Famicom and punch and kick our way to the weekend. With the classic Super Street Fighter 2, Dragon Ball Z Super Butouden, 2, and 3, Ranma 1/2, and Fatal Fury Special.

Sadly the classic Nintendo games and systems have been just lurking in the shades, but this evening they are coming out swinging.
I’m buckled up and ready to see what this evening has in store! 🥊💨

This is a big moment in the gameroom. The Sega CDX after many decades had started showing its age. During this year, when powered on, and at times in the heat of a 16bit battle, the CDX would randomly reset. 😫

After my excellent experience with recapping, and RGB modding my SNES jr, it was time for the Sega CDX. A huge amount of caps, and a CMOS battery replacement.

Getting the CDX installed in the gameroom, and it’s better than new! No glitch resets, saves are locked in.
