Nine bras. One very personal reason to revisit them.

This isn’t a generic pink-washing post for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s my story, and this October marks one year since my preventative bilateral mastectomy.

My mom and sister both had breast cancer, and their experiences made knowing my own risk especially important. Genetic testing revealed that I carry a BRCA2 mutation, which eventually led me to go ahead with the surgery. And here’s the twist nobody saw coming: the pathology found a small area of breast cancer that nobody knew was there.

So I’m in a rather unusual club. Part previvor, part survivor. And incredibly grateful I had the information and the opportunity to act.

A heartfelt shout-out to my gynecologist, Dr. Schmitz @lifespring_womens who encouraged annual screenings and genetic testing; The Breast Center @thebreastcenter for years of vigilant care; Melanie Haney at Highlands Oncology, who helped guide me through genetic counseling and continues to care for me; and my surgeons, Dr. Yoo and Dr. Kania @arbraplasticsurgery , whose skill and compassion helped me navigate some very big decisions. And to the wonderful nursing teams at Highlands and ARBRA, thank you for making a difficult journey a little easier.

Please consider these bras my not-so-subtle reminder to schedule your screenings, know your family history, and ask whether genetic counseling or testing makes sense for you.

And please share this with the women in your life. Awareness changed my story. It might change someone else’s too. 💖

One thing leads to another… and sometimes another and another. 👁️ 👁️

Slide 3 is where the inspo started: a vintage ad for the ’80s drugstore staple that’s still hanging around all these years later. That led to the Blind Contour drawing on slide 2, which led to the finished mini-collage on slide 1.

But of course all that led to lashes, which took me somewhere else entirely. Swipe to the last slide to see where they landed…especially if you missed my last reel, because Instagram seems to have missed it too. 😏
