Even if I knew more languages I do not think I’d find the words

Your body decided it was done adventuring
Even if maybe we weren’t

Our pack is a big dog short
Our home is quieter
Not simply because you aren’t here to alert
But because your energy was that of a much larger dog

All the sounds you added to our home
As you got older it was your shuffle as you walked
Or your snores when you slept
Your correctional bark at Zeus or Stanley when playing
The bark for “you excluded me!”
Before your arthritis
The constant squeaking of a toy
Especially in the morning
The house knows these sounds are missing
So do we

It always made us laugh
Most photos are of you sleeping
Because when you were awake
You immediately stopped doing what you were doing
We always joked
“He doesn’t want his soul captured”

Your love was your biggest gift
While your love will be with us forever

we don’t see each other often.
life turned into airports.
jobs.
holidays spent a few states apart.

but my phone lights up with your name and a voice note.
you tell me the things that don’t make it
into social media posts.
the almost-panic on tuesday.
the random kindness from a stranger.
the way you’re trying a new routine in the mornings.

i listen while folding laundry.
doing dishes.
staring at the ceiling in bed.
we answer each other hours later.
sometimes days.
but the connection never ends.

miles matter less than this.
knowing that somewhere
out there you’re talking to me

I really thought we would have figured out how to allow you to live forever by now.

The universe and mom knew I needed you when you came into my life. I did not always deserve your unconditional love, but alas, no human truly deserves the love our animals give.

You brought laughter into our lives even when we were sad, you always seemed to know we needed it.

You always flew, almost literally, off of stairs, you never wished to just walk down them despite any injury you might have. You were that happy.

You loved your stuffed “babies” and toys, never going anywhere or greeting anyone without a minimum of two in your mouth.

You overcame an illness that doctors did not think you’d outgrow or overcome and because of that, we got an amazing 14 years with you.

There are not enough words.

I am so grateful to have had you. I am so grateful to have loved you. I am so grateful to have been taught by you.
