Charcoal, graphite, house paint, polyurethane on canvas.
Sculpture piece is an extension of the process of rebirth, from the red to the charcoal and the wood which is burnt to make the Sumi I used for the painting.

This piece is for a group exhibition for WSMA (Wooden School Museum of Art @wsma.jp) titled REBIRTH. The show opens November 2nd in Gose, Nara Prefecture. On view until November 10th.

One year ago, I had a solo museum show titled SHUKKE at Art 1 Museum in Jakarta, Indonesia.
What an incredible journey and experience. Exhibition documented the journey and transformation of who I am today.

A few weeks ago, the talented and brilliant Shanti Sumartojo came to the village for a 4 day artist residence. She did field recordings with @nicollemirabueno and afterwards did a few days of painting with me. These are some of the pieces we did together.

As part of Nicolle’s (@nicollemirabueno) visit to Higashiyoshino we decided to expand our previous collaborations. This time we set out to do a small series of paintings. Each one found its own rhythm and balance. We just followed a simple rule of taking turns until each painting told its own story.

What unfolded was purely improvised (given the simple rule). Over the course of making this series, a narrative developed—or perhaps it was a banter?, some of it trailed off into silence, while others asked questions that we could not answer. Whichever direction it took, all of it was left on the canvas.
