“Douglas Diaz: Joy Is Happiness For No Reason"

The exhibition will be on view through July 29, 2022.

_

Douglas Diaz (b. 1972) is an artist born in Brooklyn, New York. Currently lives and works in Sweden, Stockholm.

The exhibition will showcase a series of acrylic paintings on paper and canvas that represent a new proposal that marks a shift from the themes of sorrow and darkness to joy and happiness.

For Díaz, joy represents an ever-present condition not unlike the blue sky. Everything else, such as clouds, storms, or birds, are the part of life that obscure our view of the sky. Conversely, he defines happiness as a momentary euphoria, an external and inconsistent force that ebbs and flows. Happiness is a condition that distracts from the true goal of joy. "To truly be still and find the joy that I seek—and that I believe is who I am in essence, there has to be an acceptance of all the things that goes with life. It's not about subtracting things; it's about layering them on top of each other."

very happy to put another album out into the wild. https://thermalhowl.bandcamp.com/album/axon-petal-riot These tracks all dance across the terrain of a set of common themes, stretched out across a couple of years of erratic, spontaneous recording. They are extrapolations. It's possible that subconsciously these textures and ways of approaching the instrument were quasi-intentionally and strategically engaged, but it is also very possible that I simply had no idea what I was doing, that there's just a phase space of possible sounds that these hands make on that guitar, and every few weeks this constellation of gestures and sounds happened to happen. Like an asteroid cloud shepherded by a much larger gravitational force, the cloud adopts forms, geometries and patterns that it cannot itself perceive.

The album cover art is a painting by Doug Diaz, dear friend and colleague for many years. In spring 2021 I reached out to explore whether soundscapes might be good provocations for his paintings, or vice-versa. Several of his paintings were then made under the influence of two of the tracks on this album, and this painting then resonated for me with the title, Axon Petal Riot, which is of course... a clue.

Douglas Diaz’s latest online exhibition ‘UNTIL THE END’ continues today!
.
‘As part of my UNTIL THE END series, I have been working on individual paintings. These came about because some of the oil tubes had harden to the point where I couldn’t squeeze them out. Using these tubes meant that I needed to grab the paint with my hands and apply it directly onto the canvas. This experimental action would eventually influence the development of my gestures and the desire to make the paint more sculptural and three dimensional.

Eventually I started to make these with tubes of paint that were perfectly normal, but the process still involved using my hands to apply the paint directly on to the canvas. These new UNTIL THE END works are therefore much more expressive and are defined by a sense of speed and immediacy which mirrors the bodies of work I have been creating and become known for over the last few years.’ - Douglas Diaz, Artist Statement.
