Meet Cuyler, a Biomedical Mechanical Engineering student from @uottawa!

His scholarship placed him in Heidelberg, Germany, which led him to join the Intelligente Systeme und Robotik in der Urologie group at the German Cancer Research Center, with a focus on programming machine learning tools for urologic surgeries. Outside of work, he enjoys travelling around the world, playing sports and video games.

“My personal highlight was my weekend travels across Germany and Europe. I went to France, Switzerland, Munich, Spain, and Greece during my time, my favourites being Switzerland and Greece. I visited the Swiss town of Interlaken, where I hiked the Swiss Alps from a small village called Lauterbrunnen. Through our journey, we saw green pastures, large snow-capped mountains, and pastures of brown cows roaming the path. We topped it off by paragliding across the beautiful town of Interlaken, where we saw the town surrounded by the Alps and the twin turquoise lakes of Thun and Brienz.

Living in Ottawa all my life, I definitely felt pushed out of my comfort zone moving to a new country. It was a challenge to adapt to a new lifestyle and culture, but those are the moments I look most fondly on, and it’s thanks to the support of the amazing people I met in my work, in my town, and through my travels across Europe!”

Stay tuned to our stories, where you can get answers from Cuyler about the program and what life is like in Germany! 🇩🇪 taken in Germany by @daad.usa

Meet Jairus, a Bachelor of Science student from the @ualberta ! His scholarship has led him to join the molecular genetics and integrative biodiversity department at the Museum Für Naturkunde Berlin, with a research focus on freshwater invertebrates. Outside of the lab, Jairus enjoys going on runs around the many city trails Berlin has to offer.

“My favourite moment of my internship was connecting with other interns living all across Germany when we all gathered for the DAAD-RISE research conference. Having the opportunity to listen to such talented individuals from different North American and European universities was a privilege to witness, which made presenting my research project in front of my peers very special. It was also memorable to work in a lab that embraces international collaboration and that experience has now shaped the way I want to incorporate research into my future career.

When I first arrived in Berlin, I remember being worried about the change in lifestyle that I was culturally unfamiliar with, but the food, the views, and the people I’ve met made my decision to accept this opportunity worth it. I’ve formed countless memories all thanks to the friends I’ve had the honour to meet and share my lived experiences with in Europe.”

If you want to hear more about Jairus’ DAAD-RISE journey in Germany, be sure to check out our stories soon! 🇩🇪 taken in Germany by @daad.usa

Meet Harshita, a 4th-year student at @uoft specializing in Psychology with a double minor in Forensic Science and Biomedical Communications!🌲

This past summer, she joined the DAAD-RISE program as a research intern at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. Working in the Clinical Neuropsychology lab, her project focused on visuomotor adaptation. She helped run behavioral experiments using and grip-force sensors to better understand how the brain maps cognitive functions.🧠

Outside the lab, she took advantage of living in Munich to experience an international research environment, try new food, and travel across Germany and six other countries. 🚄🚋

Check out the stories today to see what her summer looked like, and drop any questions for her in the comments. 🌞 by @daad.usa
