Last week Nafisah @nafisahs.photocollection debuted her solo exhibition BONDED in our gallery space. The community really showed up for her including loved ones, fellow artists/classmates and even her muses that helped shaped this intimate photo series.

Nafisah’s work really demonstrates what it means to craft a love letter for the Black Queer community and we hope everyone who visits can truly appreciate the care and vulnerability displayed in her images!

Come by, bring a friend and experience an original Black family album. BONDED remains on view and open to the public Monday—Friday, 11AM—4PM.

It is with great pleasure to announce our September BXposed artist Nafisah! @nafisahs.photocollection

BONDED is a visual love letter to the Black queer community, seen through the lens of a queer, non-binary Black woman. Through editorial portraits and intimate, unguarded moments, the project centers family, self-love and community - exploring chosen families, inherited bonds, and the journey of self-discovery. BONDED places the audience in a reflective space where they see themselves mirrored back with clarity and care. This is the Black family album - crafted to awaken empathy, deepen self-awareness and celebrate the fullness of Black queer love and life.

In collaboration with @lr2studio for this month’s series, we welcome you to join us for the opening reception on Monday, September 21st from 6-8PM at the Andrew Freedman Home.

The exhibition will be on view until October 16th! Stay tuned for updates on Nafisah’s public workshop which will be held at LR2 Photo Studio.

The BXposed Artist series is a monthly rotating exhibition that provides a platform for both emerging and established Bronx based artists to exhibit lens based art here in their own borough.

Nafisah’s Bio:
I hate writing artist bios, they me feel like goofy or sir charlesss the third. I want this thing to feel interesting or funky or just sound like myself. But I guess you’d like to know more, so here we go! My work is influenced by & centers Black Culture, femininity, and queer identities. All through the lens of a queer, non binary, Black woman. My everyday is similar to yours listening to music like Tyler the creator, Doechii, Limp Bizkit and so on, I love going to concerts but I’m also a homebody, exploring new places, watching anime, and of course creating incredible commercial & editorial fashion photographs.

I became a photographer to be creative, to actualize thoughts, emotions, and bring my dreams to life. Not to write thisss. Let’s get back to the nitty gritty, my background in psychology from Bronx Community College helps me understand & connect more with my models and clients, while my time at Fashion Institute of Technology refined taken in Andrew Freedman Home by @dabxposure

Join BXposed artist @bradfarwell (Brad Farwell) for a Tintype Photography Workshop.

What is a tintype?

A tintype is made by an entirely handmade process with origins dating back to early 1800s. Metal plates are sensitized, exposed and developed on-site using a portable darkroom. The image is made in silver and will last many decades.

Using the Andrew Freedman Home as our creative arena, we will accompany the artist to experience the intricacies of wet plate collodion photography outside on the lawn and veranda.

Bronx-based photographer and educator Brad Farwell (b. 1975) works with analog and digital photographic processes to explore ideas of place, history, perception, and memory. Since moving with his wife and daughters to Highbridge in 2013, much of his work has focused on the rapidly shifting architectural landscape of the Bronx. Brad’s photos have been published in The New York Times Magazine, McSweeney’s Quarterly, and his writing in Draw it with your eyes closed: the art of the art assignment. His photographs have been exhibited worldwide, including the The Noorderlicht Photo Festival in the Netherlands, the American Academy in Rome, Rick Wester Fine Art in NYC, and the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown. He currently teaches photography at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. Brad is also the creative mind behind the website: https://www.bronxtintype.com

In the show opening next monday I’m also excited to be showing five images from an ongoing project called “Work in Progress,” a title taken from the mandatory informational signs that go up on those green plywood walls surrounding construction sites. For “Work in Progress” I’m using an 8x10 film camera and an antique wide angle lens older than all of you to make monumental and slightly optimistic (!) images of these new developments at various stages of construction. The detailed black and white darkroom prints record the buildings in potentia, structures not yet in use, still hoping for the realization of an idealized form, an architecture that hasn’t disappointed us yet. For everybody who I’ve harassed about shooting film, this is your chance to come out and call out my hypocrisy as I stand in front of these big 20x24 darkroom prints!
