But not without some setbacks…

I wasn’t able to run for the last month of training because of IT band issues, and I was honestly preparing to write a “lessons from failure” post.

The mental battle during that stretch was tougher than any of my long runs.

A full year of buildup…only to potentially come up short on the big day. And to add a little pressure, my family flew 3,000 miles to watch it all go down.

Not exactly the ending I had in mind.

Luckily, during that last month I did everything I could. Mobility work. Stretching. Corrective exercises. New shoes. Learning more about proper running mechanics.

Still, I was mentally preparing for Plan B.

I even thought I might end up posting something like:
“Even though I made it to the starting line, the finish line will have to wait for another day…another lesson on perseverance from the Dad Bod guy.”

But then race day came.

And somehow…everything went right.

I got great sleep even though we lost an hour to daylight saving time.

My Uber somehow made it through insane traffic with time to spare.

I committed the mortal sin of wearing brand new shoes on race day, but the @saucony Hurricanes felt like running on marshmallows.

And most importantly, my IT band didn’t bother me.

I kept waiting for the familiar pain to show up, but the worst I got was a little discomfort here and there.

By mile 3 or 4 I started to believe I might actually finish. But like a Red Sox fan before 2004, I kept waiting for something to go wrong.

It never did.

Every friend I saw cheering along the course gave me another boost of energy.

And somehow I had enough left in the tank to get through the 80+ degree heat and go the distance like Rocky.

Celebrating with my family at the finish line was one of the highlights of my life.

So what’s the lesson?

I came incredibly close to not even showing up on race day. Then I realized that would’ve been the only real failure.

When you simply choose to show up, things have a funny way of working out.

Show up to your workouts.
Show up in the kitchen.
Show up in life.

Do that consistently, and some pretty incredible victories tend to follow. by @dadbod_steve

Wanna lose the Dad Bod?

Lift weights 3-4 times per week

Hit 10,000 steps per day

7 hours of sleep per night

To calculate your calories multiply your CURRENT body weight by 12.

To calculate your protein multiply your TARGET bodyweight in pounds by .8 and hit that number in grams.

If you’d like to work with me to get results like my client, Jimmy, comment the word “coaching” for details.

👋 Hey, I’m Steve. If you’re a man over 40 with 15 to 30 pounds to lose and you KNOW you should be in better shape, you’re in the right place.

💪 I help busy successful men lose the dad bod, rebuild muscle, and feel athletic again without living in the gym, starving themselves, or giving up their social life.

❌ You don’t need another unsustainable diet, 6 workouts a week, or some weird list of foods you can never eat again.

🚨 My approach is crazy simple. Prioritize protein, control your calories. Lift 3 to 4 days a week. Get your steps in. Sleep better. Then make it realistic enough that you can actually keep doing it when work and life get crazy.

👉 Follow me if you want no BS fitness advice for men over 40 that just works.

🤷‍♂️ And yes, I still eat pizza, burritos, and make plenty of decisions that would disappoint many fitness influencers. by @dadbod_steve

If you're over 40, you need to stop overcomplicating your routine. Training doesn't require as much time as you think. You just need to stay consistent.

Your diet also doesn't have to be complex. You just need to control your calories and get enough protein.

Prioritize your sleep, get a few more steps, and stay locked with all this.

Avoid extremes, and in a few months, you'll be unrecognizable. by @dadbod_steve
