POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
8 years ago, our cancer journey began when the pediatrician called us after our daughter’s blood test revealed something horribly wrong, telling us to drop everything, pack for a few days, and go to the ER at OHSU. We arrived at 10:13pm that night and she was diagnosed with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia the next day. She did chemotherapy from August 26, 2018 to October 31, 2020. She was pronounced/considered CURED of cancer on October 31, 2025 and we remain ever grateful for Verity’s Victory.

She experiences lasting effects from the chemotherapy but she consistently reveals the raw power of the human spirit. Our princess demonstrates that we can accomplish great things and overcome insane challenges no matter young or small we may be.

I witnessed a bald, weakened toddler face death itself and win.

There is thus no separating myself from pediatric cancer and cancer parenting.

And like I had said when I started this account a few years ago:

If my kid can puke, get up, and take more chemo like an absolute BAMF and face the day, I can make more effort to take better care of myself. So today I reinstate my resolve to do just that.

Verity, you continue to inspire me and I am forever proud to be your father.

Not so bad. Building my rows up and did some delts, which I usually miss. Not a bad way to feel the burn!

Back extension was a little heavy, so I know to take it down some but since I’ve been doing more lower back work I’ve been experiencing less pain. I’m a happy camper there.

A full body workout. I wish that I could get more gym time, but I’m very thankful for what I get 💪🏼

Had to make some adjustments because some leg exercises were making my feet hurt a little too much, but that’s okay. Variety is the spice of life after all! by @dadgetsfast

When you give a two-year-old your phone during your workout, don’t expect great shots 😆

At least you can see some definition in my lower legs right? Haha

One thing they don’t tell you about OCD is not the perfectionism and contamination concerns as are commonly seen (and turned into parody) but the intrusive thoughts which cause the anxiety. I have a multi-cluster form in which I am affected by multiple types of intrusive thoughts: contamination, scrupulosity (religious/moral purity/divine calling and guilt) and checking things several times, like locked doors or in my case social media.

What if I miss something? What if I have something new? What about likes, comments, etc? I can’t miss it because of XYZ. Constant. It’s all day.

Now the key to winning in OCD is not to fight the thoughts (that makes it worse) but rather to give them less of a place and to interrupt the cycle of uncertainty. Yes I already checked the door; it is locked. I checked Instagram 2 minutes ago; there is nothing so new and important that I can’t see it during my next break.

It is exhausting.

So instead of fighting, I will give it less of a space. I will restrict all social media to my computer. I am only on my computer a few days a week for school so this gives it much less real estate.

Back in the day before my daughter’s cancer fight and everything else fried my nervous system I pretty much only talked about fitness with friends. I only took pictures of family things and geocaches. When I turned to social media that’s eventually when the issues began, chiefly after I had made the Run Happy Team. Obligations and perfectionism have a sort of toxic interplay.. The RHT was a great experience and the BRC shines, when it came to my mental health…well, not so much.

This has become a sort of grounding system, one with people whose stories I enjoy. But it becomes hard for me because I constantly have those thoughts and the ritual to shut them up is to check. It’s also this way with keys and such. That’s the basic definition of OCD: intrusive thoughts and a ritual to calm the anxiety/thoughts, with such thoughts/anxiety lasting for one hour or more each day.

I share this because I’m coming to grips with it and maybe you struggle too and you need to be seen.

It’s time to connect more with the real world. by @dadgetsfast

Plenty of people walking their dogs and a horde of geese. The clouds made this morning run pretty!

Labor Day Weekend in a tourist area is gonna make for a busy weekend at work, but my team and I got plenty done the last couple of days so we will survive just fine. I’m thankful that I get to sleep in today and some tomorrow for some later coverage before my weekend on Monday.

As always, this was listed as overtraining and if I’m honest I should have waited for tomorrow since my chest and thighs are sore from yesterday’s awesome lift but I feel so good.

Went running with my main little man today. He needed to have a good father-son talk and he was very frustrated so I did not find it right to try to get pictures of him.

Puberty is a rough one, we all know! But it’s quite interesting being on the other end of it as a dad now.

Anyways, we almost hit 2 miles and he only needed a couple of breaks. We will be doing this once a week from now on, weather and health permitting 🏃 🏃‍♂️ 💪🏼

Little too heavy or a few too many reps. But hey, it’ll be fine…right? Oof.

I love having charts because I’m an extremely visual learner! looks like I’ll be hitting chest and back as soon as I can!

And boo-boo on its insistence I’m overtraining 😆 It’s just been a bit since I last used the app regularly.

Either way, two days off are up once I clock out. Woohoo!

Easy pace today. Fresh air, clear head. Runs like this remind me why I keep coming back to it despite the setbacks I’ve had.

This proves that the best runs (for me at least) aren’t the fastest ones…they’re the ones that make glad you got out there.

But of course Bevel says I’m overtraining. I say I had too much coffee before heading out 😆

All the same, everybody…I’m happy to see you all out there doing what you do 💪🏼 🏃
