A conversation between earth and fiber, intertwining hard, structured ceramics with delicate threads. Royal Academy, Summer exhibition 24

SILA is an exhibition that bridges the timeless tradition of Palestinian embroidery with the dynamic world of contemporary art. Rooted in the rich tapestry of Palestinian history, this project invites artists across various disciplines—including textile art, painting, and sculpture—to create works that incorporate the intricate motifs of traditional embroidery as a central and powerful aesthetic element.
Palestinian embroidery motifs are steeped in cultural significance, reflecting stories of identity, heritage, and resilience. Each stitch carries symbolic meaning, with patterns and colors tied to specific regions, social status, and personal narratives. These motifs evoke themes of land, community, and history, serving as a visual language of collective memory and resistance.
By merging these timeless motifs with contemporary approaches in textile art, painting, and sculpture, SILA celebrates the enduring legacy of Palestinian culture. Each work tells a story of resilience and identity, transforming embroidery into a vibrant symbol of perseverance and cultural renewal .
Part of the exhibition is based on a collaboration with the master embroiderers of Inaash Association, who bring decades of craftsmanship to the project. Working closely with the artists, they adapt traditional techniques to meet the creative vision of each piece. This ensures the authenticity and symbolism of Palestinian embroidery is preserved while enabling its transformation into innovative forms across multi media installations. Last February, during Ramadan, “Threads That Unite Us”خيوط تجمعنا, curated by ‪@hala_khayat_‬ along wit‪@safir.art‬rt , hosted‪ by @amirajoudeh‬udeh. ‎. “Threads That Unite Us” is conceived as a space of dialogue rather than declaration. It's simple yet fostering new conversations across contexts. Through the language of lines, dots, and threads, Threads That Unite Us reflects on the metaphorical and material significance of Silk and Sadu, and on textile-based practices as carriers of memory and connection. These woven references remind us of the enduring ties shaped by movement, hospitality, shared heritage, and creative exchange between Syria and the UAE. The exhibition explores identity and continuity, through contemporary practices rooted in craft and cultural reference. It is both a beginning and a bridge. An act of gathering grounded in openness. هنا، يصبح كل خيط جسراً، وكل زخرفة حواراً، وكل عمل فني شهادة هادئة على ما ‪@amirajoudeh‬‪ @nujoomalghanem‪ @mohannad_orabi_art‬‪ @noor.bahjat‬‪ @ranimhalaky ‪@nidalkhaddour‪ @akilartworkwork‪ @michel.zayat‪ @lanaelansari‪ @zeina.salameh‬aelansari @zeina.salameh taken in Dubai, United Arab Emirates by @dahouk_creations

“Stitched Resilience”
From the collection “Threaded Whispers of Dreams”.
Fragile yet enduring, embroidery and clay become metaphors for resilience.
Each fracture and stitch carries memory, tradition, and strength preserving heritage through the language of thread.
Through this work, the enduring spirit of Palestinian women transforms hardship into quiet beauty, safeguarding identity for generations to come.
Pottery, in its essence, symbolizes resilience. Despite its fragile nature, it endures time and transformation. Each breakage became a testament to the strength hidden within fragility and become a testament to the human spirit’s ability to transform pain into beauty, weaving stories of hope.
It becomes a means of passing down traditions, stories, and values to future generations, ensuring that the essence of your roots remains alive and thriving in the ever-evolving landscape of art.

 “Between Loss and Survival”

An Intimate Reflection on Displacement :
A sculptural work that brings together ceramics, embroidery, metal, and fabric to explore the quiet, enduring weight of displacement. The work evokes the intimate rituals of packing, carrying, and leaving.
The work functions not only as a vessel for belongings, but as a vessel for memory.
The boukja speaks to what we choose to hold close: a quiet narrative of necessity and survival, of what we cling to when everything else is lost.
Metal elements interrupt the softness of the textiles, acting as barriers, introducing a tension between mobility and restriction. The materials, often associated with opposing qualities, delicacy and durability, mirror the emotional contradictions of displacement: grief and resilience, uprooting and adaptation.
The work asks: what remains when everything familiar is left behind, and how do we rebuild meaning from the fragments we carry with us? Al Qala Exhibition at “Real Fabrica De Tapices” in Madrid. On till the 4th of June. @thesilaproject @kiyanart by @dahouk_creations

"Threaded Whispers of Dreams" by Dahouk Chamsi-Pasha transforms the ceramic surface into a site of homage and remembrance. Drawing from the intricate language of
Palestinian cross-stitch embroidery, the work honours generations of women whose hands held history, threading memory into dresses, headpieces, and belts that adorned everyday life.

In translating the softness of thread into the firmness
of clay, Chamsi-Pasha offers a gesture of preservation and
transformation, allowing fragility and strength to coexist on the same surface.

The collection is composed of forty-eight ceramic pieces, a number that echoes with deliberate resonance. It speaks of 1948, the year of the Nakba, when countless Palestinians were exiled from their homeland. Each object in the series becomes a vessel for the unspoken—a quiet monument to memory, displacement, and the refusal to be erased.

"SILA: All That Is Left To You" runs until January 5, 2026

I am pleased to be participating in “Sila” at Maraya Art Centre in Sharjah @marayaartcentre

“Sila” is an exhibition that bridges the timeless tradition of Palestinian embroidery with the dynamic world of contemporary art.

Part of the exhibition is based on a collaboration with the master embroiderers of Inaash Association, who bring decades of craftsmanship to the project @inaashassociation

A very special thank you to Rula Al Alami @kiyanart for inviting me to take part in Sila, it has been a great pleasure to work with you and with Inaash who do such important work.

Thank you to Nina Heydemann for hosting “Sila” in Maraya Art Centre and making it such a success.

Thanks to Cima Azzam and Noor Suhail for the wonderful work they did in curating the exhibition.

My Installation in “Sila” focuses on uprooting and displacement.
It includes rolled rugs and bokjas, to ask the question: what do we carry with us when everything else is lost? #sila. The pieces combine ceramics, embroidery, metal, and fabric to explore the quiet and heavy weight of displacement.
The works are not simply about objects, but about relationships: how things lean on one another, how care is both delicate and enduring, and how what seems fragile can also endure through its very vulnerability. taken in Maraya Art Centre by @dahouk_creations
