We’re honoured to share that Daily Bread has once again been named one of Canada’s Top 100 charities by Charity Intelligence Canada. 🎉

Each year, only 100 Canadian charities receive @charityintel’s highest five-star rating, which is based on an evaluation of the organization’s financial transparency, results reporting, demonstrated impact, need for funding and cents to the cause per dollar donated.

This 2026 recognition reflects the stewardship of our Board of Directors, whose commitment to strong governance, accountability, and transparency ensures that every contribution is directed responsibly toward our mission.

It also reflects the dedication of our staff, volunteers, donors, and partners, who make our work possible every day. 💛

As food bank visits remain at record levels, we remain committed to earning the trust of our community, ensuring emergency food access to anyone who comes to our doors, and advocating for the changes we need to end hunger and poverty in Toronto.

Our Farm to Food Bank program works with 20 Ontario farms to rescue produce like these gorgeous bell peppers that cannot make it to grocery store shelves.

Last year was the program’s most successful year to date. With the support of donors, we diverted over 5.6 million pounds of produce from the landfill and delivered it to families in need. That’s nearly 30% more fruits and veggies than the year prior.

Thank you to all the farmers and supporters who make this program happen. Not only are you avoiding food waste, you’re also saving donor dollars that would otherwise be needed to purchase produce. 🥕🥔🍎

Meet Volodymyr. He moved to Canada with his wife and two boys to escape the war in Ukraine and find a fresh start. But rebuilding their lives in Toronto came with a new set of challenges, even after he found employment.

“Almost my entire salary needed to go to rent, even though I found a good job and one of the best-priced apartments on the market,” says Volodymyr. “When you have to choose between paying for rent or food for your kids — that is not a normal situation.”

He's not alone. 88% of Toronto food bank clients live in unaffordable housing, and 1 in 5 (22%) spend all of their income on housing, leaving nothing for food, clothing or other essentials.

"Support from food banks gives us breathing room to feel safety, to feel some stability, and to feel like a start point to grow and to help other people," Volodymyr says.

He is deeply grateful to the donors who make that possible. “The availability of food each day depends on donations. Your support means everything. Thank you for helping families like ours get through the hardest situations of our lives.”

Five years ago, the Government of Canada declared September 30 as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to ensure the heartrending, 150-year-long history of Canada’s residential schools is never forgotten.

Hunger is inextricably linked to the abuses suffered there, both in the past and the present. There was widespread malnutrition in residential schools. And today, over 40% of Indigenous children ages 1-14 living off-reserve are in food-insecure households (@statcan_eng). The legacy of oppression and discrimination lives on, with far-reaching socioeconomic implications.

September 30 is a day of reflection. It’s a time to honour the children sent to residential schools and to recognize the ongoing impact of this historic trauma on our country.

As an organization that values equity and inclusiveness, we are taking time today to learn more about what each one of us can do to be a part of reconciliation. We invite you to do the same.

Today is International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. To mark the day, we asked Lara Conceicao, our Quality Assurance Manager and food safety specialist, about how to tell if produce is still good to eat or if it should be discarded.

Armed with this knowledge, we can avoid food waste and fight the food insecurity crisis at the same time.

*Please take these images with a grain of salt! It was difficult to find produce in our warehouse that fit these descriptions. We blame our incredible farm partners who donate fresh fruits and vegetables to us through our Farm to Food Bank program, saving naturally imperfect produce from the landfill. Thank you for what you do to combat food waste and ensure farm-fresh produce goes to families facing hunger now. 🥕🫑🍅

Thank you, Toronto!! You blew past our goal of raising 30,000 lbs of food through the Purolator Tackle Hunger Red Bag campaign, giving a remarkable total of 37,761 lbs for families facing hunger.

None of this would have been possible without the dedication of hundreds of volunteers, the generosity of donors, the support of our team members and our wonderful partners at Purolator. This involved not one, but two weekends’ worth of efforts to distribute 20,000 bags across Toronto, ready to be filled with food for people experiencing hunger this Thanksgiving, and brought back to Daily Bread’s warehouse for sorting and distribution.

Thank you all. Your generosity will help ensure food is available for everyone who turns to a Daily Bread member agency this holiday season.
