Motorcycle owners must install and display front number plates by November 15, or face legal action, the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has warned.

In a recent public notice, the BRTA said the government had decided to make front registration plates mandatory in addition to the rear plates already required under the Road Transport Act, 2018, and the Road Transport Rules, 2022.

Bangladesh in recent years have had little opportunity of playing a tri-series, which brings a distinct challenge as teams get little time to adjust to conditions and devise plans for different opponents.

Since winning their maiden tri-nation title in Ireland in 2019, the Tigers have not played an ODI series. Their last tri-series came in the T20 format in 2022, when Pakistan beat hosts New Zealand in the final ahead of the T20 World Cup in Australia.

Malaysia’s labour market has reopened to Bangladeshi workers after more than two years, but the control of key recruitment procedures by 25 selected agencies has revived fears of a return to the system that saddled migrants with exorbitant costs.

The Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment yesterday announced the resumption of recruitment, allowing approved agencies to process applications and prospective workers to undergo medical examinations.

Short-duration rice varieties have transformed livelihoods in northern Bangladesh, allowing farmers to grow an additional crop each year and boost both production and income in a region previously prone to periodic food shortages.

The cultivation of these rice varieties, developed by agricultural scientists at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), has helped eliminate “monga” -- the seasonal cycle of food crisis from September to November, which had long plagued the northwestern region, particularly Rangpur division.

Illegal fishing and open sales of hilsa continue unabated along both banks of the Meghna in Barishal’s Hizla and Mehendiganj upazilas despite the ongoing 22-day ban.

The ban came into effect on October 8 to protect mother hilsa during the breeding season.

Locals said 2,000-3,000 maunds of illegally caught hilsa, mostly small fish, were being sold daily in at least 30 markets across the two upazilas.

Residents of Noakhali municipality have long been suffering due to poor waste management, with garbage piling up along roadsides, clogging drains and causing waterlogging.

Across all nine wards, waste is left to rot in the open, spreading foul odours and creating breeding grounds for pests. During rainfall, garbage washes into drains and spills onto roads, forcing pedestrians to wade through filthy water.

Start your morning with a Nature Quest

KING OF THE MANGROVES

A saltwater crocodile crawls through shallow water towards a muddy bank in the Sundarbans, Khulna. The world’s largest living reptile, it inhabits mangrove swamps, estuaries and rivers across eastern India, Southeast Asia and northern Australia.

An excellent swimmer, it can travel long distances at sea. Males can grow over six metres long. Armed with powerful jaws and a muscular tail, this ambush predator feeds on fish, crabs, birds, mammals and occasionally sharks. It can remain almost completely submerged while watching for prey. As an apex predator, it helps maintain ecological balance by regulating prey populations.

Although classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, habitat destruction, illegal hunting and human-wildlife conflict continue to threaten its survival.

Harassing comments are a common sight on women’s Facebook posts, often coming from both fake and genuine accounts. In many cases, however, those accused of harassment remain anonymous, leaving women to cope with the emotional toll of the abuse.

The Facebook-based platform “No More Silence” is working to identify and expose people who post harassing comments targeting women online. Launched in November last year, the group has since grown to more than 50,000 members.

Those involved with the group said they had so far exposed the identities of around 150 people accused of posting harassing comments. They had also contacted the workplaces of at least 15-20 individuals, prompting their employers to take action against them or issue warnings.

Abir Ahmed Pias, an online activist and writer who founded “No More Silence”, told The Daily Star that his analysis found that some users who posted such comments also shared seemingly positive content on their own profiles, revealing a stark contrast in their behaviour.

Around 150 representatives from the government, banking, telecommunications, technology and education sectors, along with regulators and cybersecurity professionals, attended the event.

CyberStation assessed 767 domains across 15 sectors and found evidence of exposed personal information across almost all of them, according to a press release.
