“The history of Christian conversion in Bengal shows that the boundaries of religio-political identities in India began to meaningfully cohere at least forty years prior to the Mutiny of 1857—and in direct response to Protestant evangelism. In India, the emergence and sharpening of political consciousness based on religious identity began as early as the second decade of the nineteenth century.”

"Discussions on reducing crashes often revolve around legal reforms, although Bangladesh has enough traffic laws. Notably, several key sections of the Road Transport Act, 2018 were watered down after pressure from transport associations. However, several improvements have been made in the newly drafted Road Safety Act, 2026. So, it is not a lack of laws that stands as a barrier to improving the conditions on our roads; the problem rather lies in enforcement," writes Monorom Polok.

The question is not whether migration has benefited Bangladesh. Millions of families have depended on it, and the benefits have been substantial. The question is why an economic arrangement that transforms social relations continues to be judged principally by its monetary returns. What happens when an economy becomes better at exporting labour than at protecting the lives, relationships and freedoms associated with that labour?

The Bengali word নোনা, meaning salty, is where the entire poem pivots. Not fragrant. Not beautiful. Salty. The sweat and salt of a woman’s body, rendered with a biological honesty that would have been, and indeed was, considered shocking in Bengali poetry of that era. It is not romantic. It is not pretty. It is almost animal; it is placed deliberately next to the deer, and the boundary between human desire and animal desire begins to dissolve.

We are like those deer. We are drawn by the same ancient pull. We forget the same dangers. We fall the same way.

The Chakma narrative demonstrates how postcolonial border-making and state-centric development can transform an indigenous population with deep historical roots in its homeland into a people struggling for secure political and legal belonging. Resolving their plight requires moving beyond majoritarian approaches to state-building and recognising those for whom Partition remains a lived reality.

In colonial Bengal, arsenic poisoning could go undetected because its symptoms, including diarrhoea and vomiting, often resembled those of cholera. During outbreaks, this similarity could provide cover for murder, allowing poisoners to disguise a killing as an infectious disease. Forensic experts faced further challenges when bodies were cremated before evidence could be collected, sometimes making it difficult to detect traces of poison.

Bangladesh has a serious lead exposure problem, with 38.4 percent of children aged 12–59 months found to have blood lead levels of at least 5 µg/dL. While childhood exposure can affect brain development, attention and behaviour, the link between lead and violent crime is far more complex than headlines suggest. Karim Waheed examines the scale of lead contamination across South Asia, its effects on children and why tackling this preventable public health crisis matters.

Cancer does not require a moral explanation. I wish we could change one more thing about how we speak of illness: our hunger for clean endings. We like the survivor who returns stronger, wiser, grateful and preferably productive. I am grateful to be alive. I am also tired. I love my life. I also miss the life I had. I am proud of my body. I am also angry with it. I can feel beautiful and mourn what has changed. None of these are contradictions that need to be resolved.
