“It isn’t just anyone at the helm of USC’s MFA playwriting program: It’s a MacArthur genius and former associate artistic director at one of Los Angeles’s premiere theatre companies — associate professor of dramatic writing Luis Alfaro. He is also one of a handful of Latine faculty members I can name off the top of my head,” writes Arts & Entertainment columnist Fabián Gutiérrez.

“Yet, despite being a vital part of the school’s ecosystem, just like the technical direction program, his program was given its last rites. The switch American Theatre reported was due to the University shifting to a ‘revenue-centered system.’ They reported that there was no negotiation or a chance to save the playwriting program.”

Ironically, Alfaro’s own words bring me peace and encouragement, despite my outrage at these changes: Shortly after the news of his program’s slow, painful end broke, he steadfastly maintained his commitment to teaching.

“‘I am committed to being an artist and an educator because I believe we must maintain a connected ancient thread alive. We pass it on from one generation to the other,’ Alfaro said to American Theatre. ‘We must always make the work. We must continue to be innovative in our thinking, in the form, and in the practice. The work continues, regardless of the institution.’”

A reported rubbish fire burned about a 200-by-50-foot area at Exposition Park near the California Science Center Thursday afternoon, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The LAFD received the call at about 1:25 p.m. An LAFD spokesperson said two engines and one truck were assigned to the area and didn’t need additional resources. A USC TrojansAlert announced the fire was extinguished shortly after.

David Venegas, an L.A. resident, said he saw the fire grow from about five feet in diameter.

“It was small, … and then it just got huge,” Venegas said. “The whole little patch of grass just caught on fire.”

No injuries were reported at the time of the interview with the LAFD spokesperson, who said there was no reason to believe the fire posed any immediate threat to student safety but advised students to be cautious in the coming days.

“We have really high winds coming in and low humidity,” the LAFD spokesperson said. “Everything is sort of in alignment for what might otherwise be a very normal fire to turn into something much bigger.”

Keira Izumi, a junior majoring in mechanical engineering, was part of the inaugural season of the Women’s Pro Baseball League. She played alongside bona fide stars like Mo’ne Davis, who gained fame during the 2014 Little League World Series, and Olivia Pichardo, a Brown University pitcher who became the first woman to pitch in NCAA Division I baseball history.

After the season ended in September of this year, Izumi set her focus elsewhere, to a topic she deemed new and exciting: the possibility of a Division I women’s baseball team at USC.

While there are currently no such teams in the country, the expansion and growth of the WPBL could kickstart a change. With baseball quickly growing popular among young girls, all the way to co-ed teams in high school, the idea is not far-fetched and, in fact, entirely possible.

The main goal of this project for Izumi is to promote giving young girls a role model to look up to, as she never had one in the past. With her success on the diamond, though, she is becoming one herself.

“Just over $103,000 — this is the cost of attending USC for the 2026-27 school year, making it the fourth most expensive university in the nation, according to the Princeton Review,” writes Opinion staff writer Ellory Moran.

“Although the sticker price of $103,000 can seem daunting at first, most students don’t even encounter this number — less than one-third of the freshman population pay the sticker price as they receive institutional grants or scholarships, according to College Factual, an educational data website.”

“By collecting resources from families who can pay full price, … resources and USC’s metropolitan location are meaningfully available to students who otherwise could not afford either.”

“As Remi Wolf sat down in a wooden rocking chair to perform her new ballad ‘Guess,’ the audience finally took a moment to exhale. It was one of the very few quiet moments of an otherwise electric evening of brand-new music,” writes Arts and Entertainment staff writer Sammy Bovitz.

“Before that, however, a mass of nose studs and trucker hats snaked around in a line outside North El Centro Avenue on Saturday night at a sold-out Fonda Theatre. The crowd was ready for Remi Wolf’s ‘An Evening of Mud,’ celebrating her latest album ‘Mud,’ released Friday. Wolf played the album in full, mostly in the same order as the tracklist. If the audience reaction was any indication, ‘Mud’ is a worthy addendum to Wolf’s previous work.”

Former California gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer spoke about what’s next for California and the United States’ climate and political future at a fireside chat hosted by the Association of Energy Engineers at USC on Monday.

Steyer has been outspoken in his support for environmental initiatives for many years. During the talk, Steyer spoke about how the U.S. is already behind in renewable energy technology. He also answered questions about artificial intelligence, and what environmental policy changes would have an actual impact.

ComplexCon, launched in 2016 by culture media company Complex Networks, founded by Marc Ecko alongside producer Aaron Levant, marked its 10 year anniversary last weekend.

While at first glance, the emphasis on streetwear seems accurate, the convention acts less as a standard fashion showcase and more like a portal into modern day subculture. ComplexCon isn't just about buying expensive clothes or keeping up with the next trends.

It's a physical gathering for a culture that mainly lives on screens.

The University is shifting its responsibility for organizing the Latinx/e Heritage Month programming toward student organizations.

“The university is seeking to give Recognized Student Organizations (RSOs) a greater role in leading and planning cultural heritage month events,” the University wrote in a statement to the Daily Trojan. “This approach responds to students seeking more voice in shaping this programming and aligns with how many institutions support these activities.”

Allan J. Lopez, an adjunct instructor at the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism said the Latinx/e Heritage Month celebration events can transform shared campus spaces into visible expressions of Latine culture, especially when the community is undergoing “ever-changing” encounters with United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement and President Donald Trump.

Younger generations’ relationship with social media, AI content and digital literacy is not as simple as fear-mongering narratives have made it out to be. While there are valid concerns regarding algorithms and digital overconsumption, younger generations remain capable of critical thought.

Digital literacy does not mean refusing to consume mindless content or scrutinizing everything one comes across online. It means discerning when to apply critical thinking, when to indulge and when it’s finally time to turn off the phone.

When students at USC were asked about this tension between critical engagement and deliberate respite, their answers were similarly complicated
