✨🌳 In just over 24 hours I am speaking at the @isahongkongchapter international conference 2026 - presenting research I carried out for @fund4trees in 2024. In keeping with good biosecurity advice, I washed my boots before leaving! ✨🥾

When I received this invitation from Serena Man 萬雪玲 MArborA, I was both surprised and delighted. I never could have anticipated that what started in 2022 with a phone call from Russell Ball (after one of the Arboricultural Association’s inimitable #WednesdayWebinar sessions) would lead me to the other side of the world as a conference speaker in 2026! I remain extremely grateful to those who invested time in my professional development throughout the research process (Kieron Doick, Carl Lothian, Jon Banks, among others), and to those who have since helped publicise it ( Emma Gilmartin, John Parker, Fund 4 Trees) 🌲🙏

I note that common tree maintenance issues such as strimmer damage and incorrect planting depth appear (anecdotally and in the literature) to affect urban environments globally, so it will be fascinating to discuss solutions with international peers in person at the conference. 🌎🤝

I also look forward to sharing my thoughts on different ways to engage and communicate the solutions to industry and the public. Engaging citizens with urban tree care close to where they live is not just for the trees’ and future generations’ benefit; it is for our health and well-being today too. 🩺🌱

On a personal note, I am really excited to visit Hong Kong because I did my first two years of school there ( 👋 Discovery Bay International School!) but have not been back for over 30 years...

Is there a limit on how much wanton soup one person can eat in six days?! 🥣😋 I will keep you updated!

TBT the eternal summer of checking on newly planted trees… & now I want to do even more of it! But right now there is just one major ask from trees…they need WATER! 😬💦🌳💪

Please water the tree nearest your house with anything you can give it.

Wildlife will thank you personally, if you watch closely!

I tried to make this video in the sun but got hot and had to relocate to the shade of a generous willow.

It’s a willow I personally cared for in 2023 when a neighbour reported it looked sad after a vicious haircut. But deep below the surface, I knew it was suffering from heavy compaction - decades of inner city use but also heavy mowing machines driving over the roots.

So in autumn, we scooped up leaves from bigger trees nearby and placed them in a thick mulch around its base. This helped because the next year there was no grass to mow in a wide circle round the tree, dissuading maintenance vehicles from going so close.

The tree recovered, our love for it deepened.

It seemed fitting then, that this tree today provided the shade for me to open these beautiful flyers and send out this heartfelt invitation for other Bristolians to join me at @treecareclub as we learn to notice and care for young urban trees…☺️🌳

The first sessions are aimed at adults and involve no tree work; come along and find out more!

Thanks you so much to @hannah_bunn for the beautiful artwork - it was the biggest pleasure working with you on a flier again after so many moons - AI can’t touch us 🎨✨🖌️

Working from home in Victorian Britain? Me too. Here’s how you can feel a bit cooler in the #heatwave. Research has shown this (or similar) can drop indoor temperature by 6 degrees. It honestly is cooler about an hour after doing it. Be safe everyone.
