For all the rage and news of war, I beg you, go outside your door.

The next few days consisted of the most excellent dates with myself at the Laguna de Apoyo; facing many of my childhood fears all at once. Allow me to explain -

When I was 10, I watched Dantes Peak at the cinema with a neighbour called Thomas. I’ll never forget it because we lived in Japan at the time and, much to my mother's frustration, I didn’t sleep for about a week after. Mount Fuji-san loomed over most of my adolescence, earthquakes were an unpredictable but regular occurrence and I felt I had a legitimate reason to be afraid of it erupting again, despite scientific evidence to the contrary. I still think occasionally think about it. It just gripped me.

When I booked this holiday, I had been thinking a whole lot more about future forestry opportunities and practising Spanish than I had about volcanoes. Certainly, I hadn’t thought about volcanoes at all. Due to the tree-based burnout I encountered at the end of 2024, I decided to shelve forestry tourism and I was in for a big surprise when I started investigating what “normal” tourism in Nicaragua looks like - it’s all about volcanoes - some of which are perpetually active.

Luckily for everyone who calls it home, the Laguna de Apoyo hasn’t erupted in 23,000 years. It slowly filled with water over thousands. It has some active thermal vents and, interestingly, a species of fish found nowhere else on the planet. I spent a few days going to both busy local, and somewhat exclusive beaches; swimming with Nicaraguan families enjoying the last days of the Christmas holidays, looking at rocks, and carefully pottering the roadside with my camera waiting for birds and beasties to reveal themselves. I also spent many pleasant hours speaking with various jardineros (gardeners) who were kind enough to share information about their plants and the growing process here. Some of them encouraged me to take seeds back to England; however, due to various employer's ongoing efforts with Himalayan balsam removal in the UK, and the number of foreign ferns I’ve killed in my bathroom over the years, I had to politely decline those offers.

Take only photos (and a little volcanic pebble), leave only footprints.

~🇳🇮~ Bienvenidos a Nicaragua! ~🇳🇮~

Cuando viajas solo, llegas tarde por la noche, y aún no ha llegado todo tu equipaje; realmente ayuda a tu confianza tener un taxista llamado Wilbur tocando reggae de los 90 desde Birmingham 🤣🎶💛

When you are travelling alone, arriving late at night, and not all of your luggage has arrived yet; it really helps your confidence to have a taxi driver named Wilbur playing 90’s reggae from Birmingham 🤣🎶💛

(Facebook viewers may not get this caption because the songs don’t copy from my Instagram posts; the first song I heard in the taxi was Go Pato by Pato Banton - a very popular tune here I have since discovered!)

🌳💈🌳 How's my haircut? 🌳💈🌳

Or as I was thinking as I wandered the streets of Masaya - why’s my haircut? And who’s doing it? And who’s paying for it?

It’s easy to cast aspirations about why and how things might be done a certain way when you're on the road. Unless you take the time to talk to several locals (naturally opinions between individuals vary widely) about something you've seen; you're likely to judge it based only on your own experiences - and you will quickly learn when travelling that personal judgement is not a suitable mechanism for understanding a new terrain. I knew nothing of the seasonal pattern of dry tropical forests when I arrived in Nicaragua - where leaves fall off the trees in the dry summer months to conserve energy!

I'm not sure that all/many of these street trees are dry tropical natives; some I was told were ornamental Indian laurels. Many had quite severe punky haircuts which require (approximately) quarterly (municipally provided) maintenance, for which a compulsory payment is required by the closest residents. The haircuts were necessary to avoid branches interfereing with overhead electric lines, and the frequency due to the rate of growth in such a warm climate.

Last stop on my Nicaraguan adventure was the picturesque town of Granada, located on the shore of Nicaragua’s biggest lake.

Before I bore you with 1000 photos of colourful doors; I’ve got to introduce Granada’s busiest chainsaw operator. I found him in the hollowed out interior of an astonishingly big stump. He told me that the tree was too big and he needed help. I did not tell him I have a chainsaw license. This tree had a fungus which had eventually consumed its interior. A limb had shed on the road one night and, shockingly, nearly killed the owner of the closest cafe as she was crossing the road in front of the tree. Where my bike is parked is under the new structure they had to build due to damage to their cafe. The tree was absolutely enormous. Wildly, the incident was caught on camera by a taxis dashcam and the cafe owner showed me it online.
