A small footnote to Brice Marden: I Am Plane Image…

Yesterday’s emotional reacquaintance with Brice Marden’s gorgeous “Pumpkin Plumb” reminded me that it inspired my first monochrome diptych. Last night I went back to find the second image, my first monochrome, “Pumpkin” 2004, oil pastel on Arches. The third image is a detail of Pumpkin paired with “Plum” 2004, oil pastel on Arches.

Far more literal than Marden’s “Pumpkin Plumb”, my monochromes (I called them fruit diptychs at the time) were observational. But they were also about the way I looked at paintings as a conservator of early modern and contemporary paintings. The content was all on the surface. They were about incident, accident, surface sheen, and color. Then they became about my passion for fruit stands, the Union Square Green Market, and eventually a garden of my own.

While I never stopped painting landscapes, those early shows of monochromes at Fischbach eclipsed them. I may get back to making monochromes but for now I’m focusing on the landscape that surrounds me.

A recent studio visit with Daisy Craddock. I loved seeing the relationship between the landscape surrounding her studio and the work inside: fields, flowers, changing light and color all finding their way into the paintings.

We looked through new gouaches of flowers and landscapes, larger works in the studio, and tables full of paints, brushes and pastels. There is something especially revealing about seeing an artist’s work where it is made, surrounded by the things that feed it.
