A recent studio visit with Daisy Craddock. I loved seeing the relationship between the landscape surrounding her studio and the work inside: fields, flowers, changing light and color all finding their way into the paintings.

We looked through new gouaches of flowers and landscapes, larger works in the studio, and tables full of paints, brushes and pastels. There is something especially revealing about seeing an artist’s work where it is made, surrounded by the things that feed it.

Fresh Cut | Featured Work of the Day | Artist 48 of 50

Today we’re featuring Daisy Craddock’s “Flame of the Forest” (2025). Named after the flowering tree, fiery vermillon blossoms spread across the composition against a luminous blue sky, while the delicate outline of a perched bird quietly emerges among the branches. A band of warm light along the horizon opens the space beyond the canopy, balancing the intimate study of the blossoms and bird with the expansive landscape beyond. Working in gouache, Craddock juxtaposes the bird’s finely articulated contour with broad, transparent washes of the blossoms. Throughout her career, Craddock has moved between landscape and abstraction, using memory, observation, and the expressive possibilities of color to reimagine the natural world while preserving its recognizable forms.

This is the final week to see “Fresh Cut,” which closes Friday, July 24th!

Just ecstatic that we made the New York Times! “Seven Women Chase Icebergs” was one of the featured exhibitions in today’s paper about @upstateartweekend. “Upstate Art Weekend, starting Thursday, brings together New York artists and audiences, and offers everything from ICEBERGS to Arte Povera to keep you cool.”

THANK YOU to curator @brenda_zlamany @the_re_institute and @henryklimowicz and the rest of the seven! @karen_marston @barbarafriedman @elisabethcondon @daisycraddock and @gillordart 💙

There is a plein air painting workshop (free!) offered on Saturday, June 27, 1-6 with some of the artists. No experience necessary! Icebergs optional!

Images are a mix of our residency at @pouchcove_org in Newfoundland last May, our installation at the Re Institute in Millerton, NY, and some individual works about icebergs.

Today at 1:30pm ET, I’ll be on WIOX Radio’s Tuning Fork talking about Seven Women Chase Icebergs: Friendship and Landscape in Pouch Cove, the exhibition I curated at The Re Institute for Upstate Art Weekend.

Seven women painters, decades of friendship, one month at the edge of the Atlantic, and a lot of iceberg chasing.

Listen live. Link in bio.

I started out with an elaborate—and heavy— outdoor easel set up. But over time I found I just really loved working with these water soluble crayons in my sketchbook, super fun and so portable to take out on the rocky trails of Newfoundland.

All of us on the residency @pouchcove_org really enjoyed drawing and painting outside so for our reunion exhibition at @the_re_institute we’re doing a free informal plein air workshop. The gallery is in a spectacular old barn on a 40 acre working farm, lots of beautiful landscape to draw!! So join us this Saturday in conjunction with @upstateartweekend from 1-6 PM
