Lodestars Anthology – Issue 7: Japan (Revisited)

What a dream to have been back in Japan this month. A few weeks ago, somewhere between Tokyo and Osaka, I caught a glimpse of Mount Fuji from the Shinkansen - the very last bit of snow still clinging to her tip. All that meltwater drifts through the mountain and into the communities, rivers, forests, city streets and farms below, feeding everything and making the soil incredibly fertile.

When I visited Shizuoka last year with @lodestarsanthology, I became a bit obsessed with the paradox of Fuji - a mountain that gives and sustains life, shaping generations of craft and food traditions, yet holds the power to erase everything around her.

Some highlights: meeting Toshikazu Makino, the ninth-generation brewer at Makino Shuzo; visiting Hiroyasu and Kounosuke Kohara, the father-and-son duo running an Edo-period indigo-dyeing workshop in Fujinomiya; and eating ridiculously good Fujinomiya yakisoba; thick, chewy noodles in sauce, topped with dried sardine flakes, crisp pork-fat scraps, and various other banging bits-made with Fuji spring water, which gives them a trademark firmness and texture.

Late last summer, @lodestarsanthology came to Lewes, East Sussex, and I showed her around the pockets of countryside I grew up in. The same spots I once deemed the middle of nowhere are now my idea of heaven and we had a right good time.

We visited Charleston Farmhouse (@charlestontrust), stayed and dined at @thestar in Alfriston, walked along the South Downs Way, stopped by @rathfinnyestate where the vines spill across the Cuckmere Valley (pictured), and rounded off our trip with lunch at @no34_lewes before Liz caught the train back to the big smoke.

Yesterday’s blog post and newsletter were about British Pasture Leather and the clarity and thoughtfulness that the company brings to its mission. We published an essay about Sara Grady and Alice Robinson’s work; and here they are in their workshop in our clothes.❤️ And I wrote that the belt that Ruby Creagh has made for us is arguably the best in the world. This summer at home with magical @oliahercules, learning all about fermentation and dumplings.

We wrapped up the morning with a feast - homemade dumplings, crunchy salads full of fermented veg, all washed down with some organic Ukrainian wine. Fresh veggies from @shrub.london and jars from @kilneruk ofc.

Coming to the end of an editing frenzy and taking stock of what a mind bending trip I had to Japan with @lodestarsanthology in April. Now I just need to find the words to accompany the photos that even slightly capture the impact that fuji has on the people and landscape surrounding it which is another challenge altogether… but it’s nearly finished, and luckily, I have some nice pics to take me back in spirit by @daisywingatesaul
