The @design_institute_au sent me a tshirt to spread the message about the census on Tuesday 11th August and ensuring if you work in the design field to write DESIGNER to provide the most accurate picture of the field. Census data informs government policy and shapes decisions on skills, education and industry investment. When I was advocating for Melbourne Design Week back in 2024 the biggest barrier I found was the lack of data about the design field making it hard to advocate without real numbers. Anyway I haven’t really slept great recently with the twins so here are all the photos I took, the last three if you swipe fast enough feel like a horror movie by @dale.hardiman

Dear @brooksymp @creative_vic Melbourne Design Week creates innovation and sustainability, economic growth, tourism, global reputation, community and huge cross-industry impact. There are 98,000+ people directly employed in design-related roles, $6 billion + in annual revenue generated, and $400 million + in design-related exports. Over the past 8 years I alongside thousands of others have self-funded, initiated, curated and organised events and programming to help build and grow a sector, to cancel Melbourne Design Week would be to not preserve a decades worth of progress and would have detrimental effects on an industry you so recently as last Tuesday spoke of its importance.

Thank you to the 300+ people who have signed my letter in the past day. Unfortunately on advice we need to ramp up our collective action to ensure there is a 2025 Melbourne
Design Week.

I’ll be producing a social media tile with the hope you will all share along with tagging the ministers account later this week. I also suggest you each write an individual letter to the minister, l wil supply a template via email to the emails you submitted when adding your name to my letter.

Dear friends and colleagues,

I’m unsure if you’ve noticed that the EOI’s for Melbourne Design Week 2025 have not been sent out, and as such there are fears that the future of Melbourne Design Week is not certain. I have written a draft letter that I hope you might feel comfortable adding your name to as a means to lobby the Victorian Arts minister to continue the support for Melbourne Design Week. As someone who has worked with over 300 creatives and organised 18 programs over the past 8 years I hope you will join me in urging the minister of the importance of Melbourne Design Week.
