Just reflecting on the 2026 inaugural Artbank Prize, and how even though I didn’t win, it was an incredible honor to be included as one of eight finalists in the show and the representative for South Australia. The team from Artbank treated all of us like we were the winners and with the particular format they ran to, we were able to celebrate as a community of creatives without the expectation of who won and who didn’t.

Thank you to @artbankau and the judges for this wonderful experience and congratulations to @elyasalavi for winning with his beautiful painting. Very well deserved.

Back in 2016 we got together at an exhibition opening and it looked like we could have formed the greatest band ever to walk the planet. We parted ways before we were able to make it into the rehearsal room. The potential was untapped. Ten years later we had a 30 second reunion while our paths converged again at @sydneycontemporary

A couple of years ago Hugo Weaving was checking out my art at Sydney Contemporary and it was too late to say anything by the time it clicked that it was him. I made a promise to myself that if I had the opportunity again I’d just approach him and say hi. He is such a down to earth bloke and chatted with me for a bit. Day one art fair mission complete!!

A Ngarrindjeri/Kaurna/Chinese artist born in Tarntanya/Adelaide, Damien Shen works across drawing, painting, analogue photography and moving image. His practice draws on family histories, cultural memory and archival research to explore how Aboriginal people have been represented, classified and remembered, while creating space for reclamation, agency and care.

FOUR MARS ARTISTS ANNOUNCED AS FINALISTS IN THE BOWNESS PHOTOGRAPHY PRIZE!

We are delighted to see Scotty So, J Davies, The Huxleys and Damien Shen’s collaborative works with James Tylor, are all finalists in the Bowness Photography Prize 2026. Exhibiting at the Australian Museum of Photography from 12 September – 8 November. Congratulations to all the finalists!

Scotty’s “Moose in a 60s Dior Turban Hat” investigates the cultural and personal significance of hats through a dual series using a collection of vintage Dior hats from the 1950s and 60s. In this series, queer women are photographed wearing the hats in studio settings that reference mid-century fashion editorials.

J Davies (Ngāti Te Awhitu, Ngāti Hauā) is an Australian born, takatāpui (Māori, Queer/Trans) practice is rooted in an ever-growing archive of contemporary queer existence, weaving connection, community, and culture through the intertwined lenses of identity, intimacy, and neurodiversity.

The Huxleys’ latest work, “Pieces of Our Heart” to be featured in the Bowness prize, is a family portrait on film that has been meticulously cut up and glued together following the passing of their beloved dog Edward.

In collaboration with James Tylor, artist Damien Shen’s latest work is a reproduction of a tin type on aluminium and features Kaurna Miyurna Clem Newchurch (Kaurna, Narungga and Kokatha peoples).

“The Bowness Photography Prize is now the richest cash prize for photography in Australia, having a direct impact on the artists who participate.
