Artist @damienshen, Ngarrindjeri people, creates beautiful portraits that reference the ethnographic photography of Australia’s First Nations people from the early 19th century. These portraits are at @aucklandartgallery Toi o Tāmaki in Ever Present: First Peoples Art of Australia.

This exhibition is drawn from the collections of the National Gallery and The @wesfarmersarts Collection of Australian Art.

We are beyond thrilled that 55,000 visitors have enjoyed Ever Present: First Peoples Art of Australia in its first three weeks at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki. Kia ora 🙏 heartfelt thanks and congratulations to Curator Tina Baum, to all the artists of Ever Present and to the inspiring cohort of the Wesfarmers Arts Indigenous Leadership Program Co-Covenors for their visionary work that bring us ever deeper into an appreciation of the power and authority of First Nations art and culture.

We respectfully acknowledge the Ancestors, Elders, leaders and artists of the unceded Country and homelands where the art in Ever Present was created.

We recognise their ongoing connections to Country, Community, culture, and histories and recognise those individuals who are on a journey reconnecting to and reviving what was taken from them.

We celebrate the art, cultural expression and stories that they share with us here today.

For nearly 40 years, MGA has been developing a significant collection of Australian photographs. Our collection has a number of focus areas, and a fascinating one is artist portraits. This International Artist’s Day we highlight the instances of self-portraits by artists from our collection.

We are enormous fans of the artists we work with. When they turn the lens on themselves, extraordinary things tend to emerge. We find them an endless source of inspiration as they put themselves into curious situations, challenge us with intense and interrogative ideas, draw our attention to things that we might not otherwise have known, or articulate things that we didn’t know how to think through. Artists; we literally couldn’t do what we do without you, thank you.

ART WORKS | Practice is now showing at Adelaide town Hall. Curated by ART WORKS Emerging Curator Ann-Marie Green, Practice features artists working across a range of media who use materials in an innovative way.

The processes involved in any form of art creation are often innovative, intuitive, and challenging, and can be as complex and diverse as the viewers’ response to it. Ngarrindjeri and Chinese artist Damien Shen’s delicately etched tintype photographs investigate issues of identity and history through the physical marks he makes on the images.

Exhibiting artists include Ruby Chew, Callum Docherty, James Dodd, Lucia Dohrmann, Jackie Saunders, Damien Shen and Laura Wills.

Delivered by Guildhouse in partnership with the City of Adelaide.

Double posting but I am extremely thrilled to announce my next curatorial project ‘We will all eventually return to the earth’ as part of the @ballaratfoto

This is a further extension of some of my research from my thesis and a celebration of a collection of badass artists who are inserting themselves into history with their photographic and moving image works. These are important conversations that I hope we can keep having and showing and challenging, things won’t change unless we are open to learning and acknowledging (I still have much to learn!!). It has been a dream to bring them all together, true angels the lot of them!

Featuring Edith Amituanai, Nathan Beard, Arini Byng, Dennis Golding, Janna Ireland, Katayoun Javan, Meryl McMaster, Sara Oscar, Fiona Pardington & Damien Shen.
