Couldn’t have asked for a better time fishing an exploring around the 10,000 Islands in the FL Everglades. Being away from the commotion and noise of people, out of cell phone range and observing the beauty of nature is so tranquil and surreal. The lack of light pollution at night provides great stargazing opportunities. We were able to watch another Falcon Heavy launch Sunday night and did catch & release of a variety of fish both days. The water depth even a few miles out into the Gulf of Mexico is only a few feet, but the fish have their own individual behavior based on tides, currents, water temperature and depth. With the depth being so shallow around the mangroves and inlets, the tides don’t always do what you think they should. taken in Florida Everglades by @damnar

Been hard at work with the initial stages of building a BMW E46 M3 race car to replace the red one. Blow torched the sound deadening out of it, removed a lot of weight and unnecessary brackets. This car will be built so that it can be easily converted between Sprint Racing and Endurance Racing. A 2nd Generation ZF 8HP transmission (paddle shift) will be used for endurance racing, and ZF320 (5MT) will be used for sprint racing. A lot has changed in the way that people build these E46’s in the past 8 years. There are more companies developing trailblazing race parts, and some of the old “proven formulas” have been replaced by new methods. Looking forward to this car hitting the track with some new ideologies applied. by @damnar

After 8 awesome years of racing since we built it ground-up in 2018, the red E46 is officially retired and will be crossing the rainbow bridge in the near future. It ran its final lap at Brainerd International Raceway in Minnesota in July. The car survived quite a few wrecks including a big one at Road America in 2022 that required major structural repair and frame segments so one could say it lived longer than it should have. We’ve begun the next phase for this race program which will be a BMW E46 M3 that we’re building with a lot of what we’ve learned from developing this car for the past 8 years as well as campaigning the BMW M4 GT4 for 3+ years. The E46 M3 is a timeless classic and I think it’s a platform that a lot of drivers feel most comfortable and in sync with. Looking forward to the next thing always, but not forgetting what brought us there. by @damnar

The clicking sound and the ABS warning message are both normal. If you’re going to replace the clutch basket and speed/temp sensor, a couple things to keep in mind are that you should electronically shift the mechatronic to neutral before shutting everything down and taking the gearbox out. These gearboxes will revert to mechanically locking the input shafts together by engaging two gears at once if it isn’t in neutral. The parking lock mechanical pawl only locks the output shaft so the gearbox technically has two different neutral modes. You can still remove and reinstall the clutch basket if the mechatronic isn’t in neutral but it’s a bit more work. I had already drained the fluid and pulled the pan off for visual inspection, the process of putting the mechatronic into neutral before continuing with the repair would’ve required reassembling it and filling with fluid only to have to take it apart again. It wasn’t the end of the world doing it this way. by @damnar

I love that the pizza scene in Northeastern Massachusetts and Boston has greatly improved over the years. We’re at the point where you don’t have to go far to get an S-tier slice depending on your preferences. Some of the best food comes out of very small operations with proven formulas and ingredients. I’m not always looking for the most authentic Italian, or anything super fancy and gourmet. I love a well balanced slice with bright sauce and a good crunch. Still have to check out Pizza Project Brighton, Garlic Breath North Andover, Joanie’s Chelmsford, Big Al’s Billerica and Nick’s Pizza in Newburyport sometime. Always down to meet up with friends to check out new places too! by @damnar

Beating book time on every dash job on European cars, fewer trips back to my toolbox. I usually keep a box of gloves with this bag as well. If I’m going to take an interior panel off in the parking lot, just bring this bag with me. When I saw Thornhill last month at Royale, I wasn’t expecting them to immediately come out swinging and rip right into playing TONGUES. I’m glad I didn’t spoil it for myself by watching any fan videos off of this tour beforehand. When a band wastes no time and dives right into a certified banger, you know it’s going to be a good show. by @damnar

Unfortunately I’m no stranger to race engine failures and this was my 3rd time replacing an engine in the parking lot of Road America. A few years ago we had an S54 blow up at Sebring and it wasn’t due to driver input error but instead was due to a faulty injector. In that case, the piston crown was melted and chunks of ring land had jammed into the valve seat as the exhaust valve was closing and caused the shim to spit out. So, an ejected shim isn’t always due to an over-rev and can occur as a secondary reaction to the root cause of engine damage. Kind of a snowball effect spreading an issue from one cylinder to multiple. by @damnar

The WeatherTech 2026 Chicago Region June Sprints this past weekend at Road America will probably go down as one of my most notable race weekends to date. I spent 10 weeks prepping the BMW and went through the whole car leading up to the event but it kept fighting back. The final few weeks turned into a real thrash as I was being thrown curveballs with the car that made me begin to feel like it was possessed by a lactose intolerant ghost that didn’t want to go to Wisconsin. During qualifying, the fresh S54 race engine I just installed suffered a catastrophic failure with less than an hour of runtime on it due to driver input error. Shit happens, so less about that and more about the recovery that was made. I was the lone mechanic and really needed someone there to help with installing the backup engine. We logistically couldn’t get someone from back home to hop on a plane on short notice to help so I posted a call for help on social media searching for a qualified fly-in mechanic. Seth Thorson of Eurotech Auto Service in Minnesota reached out to me and said one of his employees was willing to drive 5 hours to us to help with the engine replacement. Kyle and I got it done, and Tom took the win in STU on Sunday despite missing his 2nd qualifier and 1st race. You can either spend a bajillion 🎰 Deutschemarks 🇩🇪💸💸💸 on buying a whole new valve body from BMW 🇩🇪🥨 that BMW 🇩🇪🍺 bought from GM 🇺🇸🦅 that GM 🇺🇸🗽 bought from Aisin 🇯🇵🗾… or you can pay me to source the inexpensive individual parts for the valve body directly from GM 🇺🇸🍟 to fix the transmission so you’ll have more Deutschemarks for the Fraüleins in the strip club. BMW won’t sell you the separator plate and plastic check balls, they’ll just sell you a whole new valve body which probably costs more than a week long cruise with Royal Caribbean. #bmw #bmwrepair #e90 #6L45 #fixingcars by @damnar
