The most unusual music I discover is alway recommended by interesting people…

When this chap started talking to me about music I could tell he was an anorak and that he spent a lot of time in this record store. So when he picked up a 7 inch single I asked him what it was, and decided to buy it straight away.

The single is called “Jig a Jig” by a prog rock band called in East of Eden. It was a top 10 hit in the 70s.

The store owner Alan seemed to think the tune had been sampled in a hip hop record. I can’t find anything about this online though. Either way, it was a great find.

Apparently all drummers know the high ring a tom can make - like a basketball bouncing on a hard floor. Had you ever noticed it? I hadn’t.

@lloydhaines explains his cloth technique, and how he learnt far too much about duct tape in a bid to dampen his drums.

I tried some of these techniques in a recording session recently, and noticed amazing natural improvements in the drum sounds I was able to get.

VINYL
Does it actually sound different?
It’s a question I’ve heard a million times. The answers are always one of two:
YES – it’s got a warmth you can’t replicate.
NO – it’s all in your head.

@alfmusics one of the owners of @nextdoorrecords_ finally gave me an answer that explains the mythology—with a bit of science to back it up.

Finally, the warmth argument makes sense.
(Not that I can hear the difference.)

There might be only one copy of this record in the country, and it has just one groove on each side.

It was given to @djyodauk at a rap battle in San Francisco, and it contains the two iconic scratch sounds “Ahhh” and “Fresh”

The most recognisable samples in Turntablism.

Episode 7 is now live on YouTube!!!

I spent a wildly eccentric day in Derbyshire, where I travelled to meet Tony Miln, the owner of legendary vintage audio repair shop and seller @soundgasltd.

I unexpectedly went on a journey of discovery into all things delay. I’ve always been drawn to dub music, but this opened my ears to the techniques and gear used by some of the legends of the genre.

Tony imparted so much information to me, and his knowledge clearly runs in the blood of his incredible business, SoundGas, which has been selling incredible gear to some of the best musicians and producers in the world for years.

Check out the full journey — link in bio.

Made the pilgrimage for episode 6.

I returned to The Church in Crouch End, one of my favourite studios in the world. In-house engineer @chiaferracuti gave me a tour and I took a deep dive down memory lane…
Back to when @londongrammar made Truth Is a Beautiful Thing here with @paulepworth

We spoke about Chiarra’s time at the Church, being an engineer in a male-dominated industry, and whether the landscape’s actually shifting.

We also took a journey through Paul’s outrageous gear collection - including the Neve desk at the centre of Studio 1.

And my pal @riley_mac joined for some synth exploration and extended chat.

Massive thanks to Phoebe and Paul for letting me shoot. Shout out @charlie.coleman behind the camera. I really loved making this one.

Full episode out on YouTube Thursday!

Hardware vs Plugin.

It’s the age-old debate. Vintage heads swear nothing beats the real thing. Then Tchad Blake comes along and mixes analog-sounding classics entirely in the box and puts all those arguments in the bin.

I asked @riccardodamian where he stands. His answer surprised me - and made me rethink the whole comparison. by @dan.hjrothman
