Apparently all drummers know the high ring a tom can make - like a basketball bouncing on a hard floor. Had you ever noticed it? I hadn’t.

@lloydhaines explains his cloth technique, and how he learnt far too much about duct tape in a bid to dampen his drums.

I tried some of these techniques in a recording session recently, and noticed amazing natural improvements in the drum sounds I was able to get.

Omg thank you for this, trying on my floor tom immediately. I dampen my FT like CRAZY but that basketball sound still rings through no matter what. I even know exactly which frequency to cut because I’ve had to do it so many times now.

Tough audience 🤒 hey, does the inside cloth dangle down onto the bottom skin? Or just dangling on the mid zone? Thanks !

I don't see any OC here. The felt on the bottom head is a good one. The basketball sound used to annoy me with my floor tom. It could sort tuning for a 12" Tom too

I strike my saxophone with a brick before I play every single time. From maybe like 3’ maybe 4’. Plays in tune every time.

Yep this is pretty common. I wouldn't use gaff and tissue paper for dampening the heads though. Wrecks the heads and leaves annoying sticky residue. I generally prefer not to use any dampening, a lot of the time people do tend to use it as a replacement for proper tuning. But dampening does still have its place (like if you're intentionally going for dead or choked drums)

Try a Slug Batter Badge and/or with a Muffelt. Problem solved.
