Jan 2019. What a bright hearted, brilliantly spirited, amazingly talented, and generous man. Wonderful to meet the legend Bob Mackie at 92Y in conjunction with his Fashion Icons interview. Sadly he's suddenly departed, leaving a bountiful legacy with legions of adoring friends and superstar fans. Incomparable. Unforgettable. Kind. Funny. Treasured. 01.29.2019 NYC.

ARE YOU NOW OR HAVE YOU EVER BEEN. Imperative, timely, electrifying docudrama by Eric Bentley (1916-2020) play is now on stage at City Center. The play's original 1972 title says it all: "Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been: The Investigations of Show-Business by the Un-American Activities Committee 1947–1958."

The 2026 production is directed by the inestimable Anna D. Shapiro, boasting an all-star, rotating cast. On stage last evening: Brooks Ashmanskas, Jason Babinsky, Steven Boyer, Adam Kantor, Frederick Weller, Michael McKean, w/ excellent guest stars T.R. Knight, Harry Lennix, Bob Odenkirk, and Molly Ringwald.

It's a major work with a cause that couldn't be more vital today than it was in the immediate aftermath of the McCarthy era. We're back in another unbelievable time that shakes the foundations of our government, the United States and who we are as a people. Go - support this show! See if u can. 1976. The summer of the Bicentennial. I worked for the National Park Service at the Liberty Bell Pavilion. Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia.

The Bicentennial Liberty Bell Pavilion team. Not taken on July 4th - that was a 24-hour day, welcoming 50 to 60,000 visitors those two July 4th days. Also, we welcomed President Ford, German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt and Queen Elizabeth, etc

I was in touch with two friends from that summer, Kim Lindy (now living in Israel) and Daniel Gurskis (nearby in Montclair,NJ). I'm standing next to the bell (touching it) w/ Kim standing in front of me (she's also touching the bell). Daniel G. is to the right, back row, w/ wire rim glasses.

Yesterday, Daniel G. remembered: "Over dinner with my wife, my youngest, and her fiancé, I was remarking about how (1) the level of excitement for the 200th seemed palpable every day for about two years leading up to it – nothing like the 250th – and (2) it was really weird wearing the National Park Service uniform going home on the Market Street subway after getting off work at the Liberty Bell at midnight."

Build up to 1976 was HUGE, inescapable, amazing. Wearing our "Smokey the Bear" uniforms and flat brimmed hats to and from work, was indeed "really weird."

It was nearly two years after Nixon's resignation following Watergate scandals, President Ford's pardon of Nixon, the summer of ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN, a year after the messy, tragic conclusion of the Vietnam War, and the presidential election year that Jimmy Carter won versus Gerald Ford.

The Liberty Bell Pavilion (1976 - 2006) was a modernist, long, squat, flat-roofed, tiny building and served as the bell's home from January 1, 1976, until it was relocated to the larger Liberty Bell Center, October 9, 2003. The pavilion was demolished in 2006. Lawn area cleared to restore green space. Pavilion pics.

Remarkable to remember those days, and our Liberty Bell Class of 1976. Philadelphia, PA.
