🎬 Meet the Filmmakers

This is Dan Sutherland, director of this year's Best NZ-Made Film, 100 Days in Fiordland.

When Dan takes on a project, he goes boots and all. We don't think it was any coincidence that he introduced his film to festival audiences wearing his smartest pair of gumboots.

Dan and two mates spent 100 winter days deep in Fiordland National Park—sea kayaking, hunting, fishing and searching for unexplored whitewater in one of New Zealand's most remote wilderness areas. The result is an extraordinary adventure and a worthy winner of this year's Best NZ-Made Film.

Im not sure if I’m just becoming more wise or more lame but the more I think about this trip the cooler it gets! Or at least I appreciate it a lot more. This was 3 years ago now in northern Quebec.
Getting to learn some tips from an epic photographer like @davidjackson__ or just floating into giant horizon lines as Benny drone scouts then get the 10second rundown on the line finished with follow me (because we are now in the rapid!)
But this was also the first time I’ve been what I can only describe as scared while standing on a river bank looking at a rapid I know we aren’t even paddling! But just the share size and length of the rapids made for a properly watertight clench! Although I still think one of the scariest things I’ve ever done in a kayak was the nearly 1km ferry glide above the rapids in the last three photos, and what the photos don’t show is that rapid continues for another km down stream!
And that’s without talking about David’s 9 minute swim… maybe the next post!

This is honestly a highlight of the Fiordland trip! I spent about 3 hrs sneaking into and hiding in the entrance of this little cave behind a rock and a tree stump watching these little Tawaki (Fiordland crested) as they would come out one at a time for a little shower and drink from a mini waterfall that fell into the entrance of the cave. I was able to stay pretty hidden and quite and they would hop past less then 2m away often not noticing me at all. Sometimes if I’d move a little they would look around for a while, even seemed to actually lock onto me then just carry on with what they were doing! Bloody cool experience!

Some more snaps from Fiordland, a place where you’re never far from something worthy of a photo, which if I remember correctly is why Daymo stopped to wait and to have quick snack so then I just took photos of him instead.

This is one of my favourite shots from last years Fiordland trip, we had been camped in Wet Jacket Arm off the Acheron passage paddling out in the morning and this island was the only thing that was catching the sun.
