🎬 Meet the Filmmakers

This is Dan Sutherland, director of this year's Best NZ-Made Film, 100 Days in Fiordland.

When Dan takes on a project, he goes boots and all. We don't think it was any coincidence that he introduced his film to festival audiences wearing his smartest pair of gumboots.

Dan and two mates spent 100 winter days deep in Fiordland National Park—sea kayaking, hunting, fishing and searching for unexplored whitewater in one of New Zealand's most remote wilderness areas. The result is an extraordinary adventure and a worthy winner of this year's Best NZ-Made Film.

🎬 Watch 100 Days in Fiordland in Session 3 of our Online Festival, streaming until 31 July.

SIDETRACKED VOLUME 36 - Foreword excerpt by @ashrouten

The world of adventure and exploration is no different than any other subculture. There are those who seek fame and fortune, and those who tread a quieter path. Both approaches are valid, but as an adventure journalist, I’m drawn to the lesser known. Those who travel hard without a focus on becoming the fastest, the furthest, or straining for the latest record and media coverage.
…
Sidetracked has spent over a decade building a cultural memory of adventure travel and expeditions. Within the pages of this latest volume, you will find varied adventures which meet some, but not all, of my criteria. But that’s not important. What is important is that they are all written and illustrated with a commitment to how the story is told – with authenticity and without hubris, and with reverence for the land and people encountered along the way.
…
Reading these stories, I feel heartened that Sidetracked continues to shine a light on travel and adventures that are not devoted to records and headlines, but instead to having meaningful experiences in some of the planet’s most inspiring and extreme environments.

Hey Queenstown — we know you love the outdoors!
If your idea of a good day involves mountains, rivers, backcountry huts or exploring somewhere new, Pure NZ is the show for you.

Proudly supported by Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand this NZ Mountain Film Festival session brings together eight New Zealand-made films celebrating the wild places we love and the people drawn to them.

Journey deep into Fiordland with three kayakers spending 100 winter days exploring its rivers and coastline, soar across the Southern Alps with a paraglider bound for New Zealand’s most remote point, and join a determined team of packrafters on a second attempt at a first descent of the Jerry River.

These are stories of adventure, perseverance and connection to the outdoors.

SIDETRACKED VOLUME 36 - Cover Reveal

The Adventures We Don’t Plan For
‘We tingled with the wonder of it all.’ —Niall McCann

In Sidetracked Volume 36, we are confronted by moments that break the most meticulous of plans. When we’re blindsided by the unexpected, chasing dreams in wild places that demand so much from us, we have no choice but to adapt.

Among the stories in this new collection, ‘The Unknown’ sees Ethan Roadley and friends spend 100 days in the shadow lands of Ata Whenua, New Zealand, seeking whitewater in a remote and challenging environment. In ‘Following the Spark’, climber Bronwyn Hodgins lets curiosity lead her back from burnout on an all-women big-wall ascent in Kyrgyzstan. Paul Nicklen tells the story of how he became a wildlife photographer. And in ‘Asgard Legacy’, brothers Niall and Finn McCann follow their grandfather’s footsteps to the Canadian Arctic, summiting a previously unclimbed peak.

When the twists and turns of an adventure stress our skills, the risk is great but so is the reward. It might just end up being greater than we could have ever imagined.
