Join us at the gallery this Saturday from 2pm to meet Dan and chat with him about his practice and this latest body of work.

‘It is from my studio on Darug land, on the fringe of the Wollemi National Park that I can witness a landscape constantly in flux, studying the constant changes in light, temperature and atmosphere.

From the hot, hazy days of summer that bring unabating downpours of rain to the relentless, bone-chilling winds during the winter. Living surrounded by a landscape of towering gums and flowering gardens allows a sort of hyper-focus. I can acutely watch the season as they shift. This body of work, painted over an entire year acts almost like a journal. Twelve months of memories, from the big and the small, all recorded in paint. From simple everyday moments that often go completely unnoticed, like a fog or a puff of smoke to catastrophic events like flood and drought.

The early morning and the late afternoon are particularly important. There is a short period during the last moments of dusk when the sky lights up brilliantly. The sun falls behind the mountains to the west, shooting out its final rays, creating an otherworldly glow.’

Australian artist Dan Kyle @dan_kyle joins the podcast to discuss his painting practice and his long connection to the landscapes of the Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury regions of New South Wales. A graduate of the National Art School, Kyle has built a career focused on exploring the Australian bush through works that sit between observation and abstraction. His paintings draw on daily experiences of living and working close to the natural environment, reflecting changing light, weather, seasons and the ongoing relationship between people and place.

In this conversation, Kyle shares how his surroundings influence his creative process, the challenges and rewards of making landscape painting relevant to contemporary audiences, and the importance of spending time observing the land.The discussion offers insight into the development of his artistic practice, his life as a painter in regional New South Wales, and his commitment to interpreting the Australian landscape through a personal lens.

Kyle’s work has been exhibited across Australia and is held in private and institutional collections. He was awarded the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship in 2020 and continues to exhibit regularly while working from his studio on the edge of the Blue Mountains.

I’ve come to know the landscape that surrounds my studio and home not just as scenery or a subject, but as a companion.  This relationship has slowly developed through time—one built on quiet observation, consistency, and respect.
