Dream of a Life Without Symptoms

I hear from some people in the comments and in my coaching groups that can't really envision their lives without symptoms. Some people have just been living with their symptoms for so long that it has become their whole life.

This can make it hard to predict or expect things to go differently. It can be hard to get back to living life when this is how you've been living life for so long.

It's a useful thought experiment to ask yourself who you are without the symptoms. What would you want to do if you weren't struggling with symptoms all day, everyday?

This thought can be scary for some people. Getting so far out of your normal comfort zone is a big step.

Start to think of how you would see yourself without the symptoms. There is life after chronic pain and this line of thinking isn't just wishful thinking. It's a way to get the ball rolling in the right direction with your mindset and your goals.

When you've determined that you're dealing with mind-body symptoms, try not to get so hung up on them. Get moving on the things that you want to do instead and where you want to place your focus.

Start to view this new idealized version of yourself as the standard. This can help direct your thinking, emotions, confidence, mindset, and behavior that you want to implement.

Work to become that version of you without the symptoms. I believe everyone can do it one step at a time.

Recovery Depends on What You DON'T Do

We can't force recovery, we need to allow it. All of the effort into fixing ourselves and the symptoms can delay recovery. The brain perceives this desperate need to fix as a sign of danger and it can cause these heightened or chronic symptoms to stick around.

Let recovery happen on its own.

We often need to get out of our own way when it comes to recovery. We need to do less of the things that convince the brain we're in trouble. The worry, despair, catastrophic thinking, are all things we want to avoid.

Recovery is more about what you don't do. When you stop doing all of the things that create perceived danger in the brain, we can allow the brain to settle and let recovery happen on its own.

Less is more when it comes to these mind-body symptoms. It's a simple concept, but it works. Allow the brain to settle down and relax. Build up the mindset that allows you to lower the fear and perceived danger more consistently.

Give Your Brain Time To Learn

Some people have a natural talent for this mind-body recovery process. They can learn how the system works, it clicks for them, and they're able to immediately convince the brain that they're safe and lower their symptoms. But this is definitely not the case for the majority...

Most people have to put in the effort and the time, just like when learning any other skill, to teach their brain that they're safe.

This is especially true for those who are trying to overwrite years, decades, or a lifetime worth of perceived danger in the brain. It takes time to convince your brain. Don't get discouraged by this.

Trying harder to heal doesn't equate to speeding up recovery either. You can't force this stuff. You can't force the brain to feel safe.

Recovery takes time and practice. Frustration with it sets you back. Pressure for perfection slows you down. Fighting and fixing constantly makes it hard for your brain to feel safe.

Cut yourself some slack and give yourself and your brain time to learn.

Change the Narrative - Over Time, Consistently

What's the story that you tell yourself, either in your head or out loud with others? Are you telling yourself that you're sick, that you can't get better, or you are waiting until you feel better?

The brain tends to believe the things we think and say most often. If you are constantly telling yourself that you are sick or broken, the brain buys into it and treats you as if that is true.

Be aware of this behavior. Be aware of what you are instructing the brain with in your thoughts and beliefs.

Start to build the mindset that you're not sick or broken. Be more selective with your beliefs and your vocabulary when describing your situation. Do so in a way that teaches the brain that you will be okay.

Take a good hard look at how you identify yourself and your symptoms. It's all too easy to get wrapped up speaking about it in a way that keeps the brain believing we're in trouble.

Let's stop using all the scary, fearful language that keeps the brain stuck. Do what you can to build up better beliefs and a stronger mindset, and over time the brain will focus less and less on the symptoms.

Not Engaging vs. Ignoring Symptoms

The more time we spend focusing on, fixing, evaluating, and researching our symptoms, the more we are giving them the power. The brain has no choice but to perceive them as a big deal with all the effort and attention we put into them.

This gets multiplied and exaggerated even more when you add in fear and danger to the mix.

If we can allow the symptoms and become more indifferent to them, we can strip away some of the power they hold over us. The less we engage with symptoms, the less the brain will amplify them.

Once you understand how mind-body symptoms work, and you've confirmed that this is what you're dealing with, it becomes much easier to lower the fear and attention surrounding them. Gain clarity and shift your focus.

It's our job to not confirm the brain's perceived danger by engaging with it. Not engaging doesn't mean ignoring. You can't avoid these feelings and your perception, but you can choose how you respond to it. Don't live in it.

Teach the brain that the symptoms are not significant or a cause for concern and allow them to fade away into the background.

Continuous Improvement Is the Goal, Not Perfection

In this mind-body recovery journey, resuming activity is an essential step of the process. Long story short, it gets us moving again and shows the brain that we are capable and safe.

However, many people want to put this off until they feel better. They say, "I'll get out and resume activity when the symptoms come down a bit."

Sadly, that's not quite how it works. These two things need to happen at the same time, because otherwise you may find yourself stuck in place while waiting for the perfect moment to get started.

We need to get the ball rolling and start teaching the brain that we can handle it. We need to work through the brain's perceived danger and doubt. It will likely turn on symptoms when you start, but if you wait for the perfect moment, there's no guarantee that it won't do the same then.

Get out, expect the best, and try to respond better than you did in the past when symptoms show up.

Work towards continuous improvement. Don't wait for the perfect moment to start living life. There will never be a better moment than the present to get started.

You don't start living life when you feel better. You feel better by living life and showing the brain that you don't need the symptoms.

You Can't Talk Yourself Into Recovery

I talk a lot about teaching the brain safety, but we can't simply walk around saying "I'm safe, I'm safe, I'm safe."

There isn't a magic word or phrase to tell yourself that will make you feel better. You can't write a script for your recovery. It's much more important to understand what is going on in the background.

It's about what the brain is actually perceiving in the subconscious. You can tell yourself that you're safe all day long, but the brain can still be perceiving fear and danger, completely counter to what you're telling yourself.

It can be more important to audit the things you are currently saying to yourself. Cut out the things that are reinforcing the fear and danger and this will have more impact than adding in new ways of thinking.

It's often easier to do less of what perpetuates fear and danger rather than outweigh it with new messages of safety. Take a hard look at how you think, talk, act, and behave and see if there is anything you can do less of to not reinforce the symptoms and the danger.

The messages of safety will become more effective when they don't have to overcome all of the fear and perceived danger. Cutting out the negative is often the easiest place to start. The further you go with this recovery journey, the more trust, confidence, and belief you will build behind those messages of safety.

Become Outcome Independent for Recovery to Work

So many people in this recovery journey are focused on healing their body, healing the brain, or healing the nervous system. Unfortunately, the harder we try to heal, the longer it takes to get better.

In this mind-body approach to recovery, healing ourselves is NOT the focus. Teaching the brain that we are safe and capable is.

When you focus too hard on the healing aspect, you are teaching the brain that there is something wrong and it needs to be fixed.

But what if there was nothing to fix? What if the symptoms were simply coming from the brain perceiving danger?

All of the fixing makes the brain hyperfixate on the perceived danger. It puts additional pressure on making sure everything works out. The harder you try, the longer it can take.

Make sure you go into this with the right intentions, not in an attempt to fix yourself, but in an effort to teach the brain that you are already okay and it can lower the warning signals.

It's a slight difference in mindset, but it can make all the difference. Allow the symptoms to fade away on their own instead of frantically fixing.

It's counterintuitive, but the less reinforcement we give to the symptoms, the faster they can pass.

It's Never Too Late to Move Forward with Recovery

One of the biggest traumas that I see in many people in this community is the struggle with mind-body symptoms themselves. The constant battle with being unwell can really take a toll on us.

Fear and attention are what keep the symptoms going. With all of the time spent dealing with this mind-body condition, it can really be quite difficult to break past this and separate yourself from the fear and perceived danger.

It's important to remember whatever started your symptoms likely has nothing to do with why they persist today. Remember that it is possible to overcome this trauma and be well again.

So how do we get over the overwhelming feelings of loss, lack of control, or even impending doom and feeling like we'll never get better?

There is a lot of heavy trauma that gets tied up in recovery. To start, acknowledge that things can and will get better. This alone can help get the ball rolling. Life after chronic pain and symptoms can still be amazing.

When you recognize that symptoms are temporary, you can start to see hope on the horizon and keep moving forward. As we keep going, the trauma can loosen its grip on you.

We can become our own worst enemies when we catastrophize and expect the worst. Don't convince yourself that this has been going on for too long and you're stuck. Mind-body symptoms are temporary and reversible by nature.

We can't get back any of the lost time, but we can look to building a better future for ourselves. You can do it too, it's never too late.

Recovery Isn't Easy, But You're Capable of Doing Hard Things

Mind-body recovery sounds simple in theory. Teach the brain that you are safe in order to outweigh the danger it is perceiving and turn off the pain and symptom alarms.

Straightforward enough, but it's often easier said than done. The simplicity of this approach doesn't make it easy.

Temper your expectations and be okay with a roller coaster of ups and downs throughout recovery. Try your best not to get frustrated when everything doesn't work perfectly on the first try.

We're working to retrain the brain to be less reactive to all of the things that trigger pain or symptoms. We're working to overcome the brain's negative bias that is designed to be vigilantly protecting us from danger.

This learning process takes time, just like learning anything else. Don't focus on the frustration, but instead focus on building resilience. Stick with it and don't be dissuaded when times get tough.

Keep going and keep working on building a stronger mindset. You are capable of doing difficult things. Recovery can be hard, but so is staying in place.
