It has truly felt like one thing after another these past few years, and now 2024 has ended on such a heartbreaking note. We recently lost my grandma—my last remaining grandparent. She was a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. The matriarch of our family. She had 4 kids, 11 grandkids and 3 great grandkids. The oldest of ten siblings.

Even with a little more time to process, it still doesn’t feel real. I keep expecting to see her every day sitting on the couch, playing on her iPad. She was so active, vibrant and full of energy for someone of her age. I thought she would outlive us all.

My sister and I were so lucky to grow up with her. She was there for almost every second of our lives. She shaped so much of who I am today—my values, my moral compass (aside from my mom). She was one of the few people who I’d care to make proud. Probably the last person on earth who cared for me with such pure, unconditional, motherly love.

I can’t explain everything all at once, and a social media post won’t do it justice, but there were so many little things she did that made me feel loved. No matter what was going on or who was around, she’d always wonder where I was and whether I’d eaten yet. If I was late coming home, she’d never fail to call to check if I was okay and ask when I’d be back.

She wasn’t just my grandma; she was my inspiration and my world. She taught me so much about our culture, about Chinese home cooking, and the importance of family.

I’m so heartbroken—my soul feels crushed. I honestly don’t know how to move forward. I know I won’t feel okay for a long time. There will always be a hole in my heart and soul now. Missing you every day Mama. ❤️ by @danchoy86
