“𝙹𝚘𝚒𝚗 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝙲𝚊𝚛 𝙲𝚛𝚊𝚜𝚑 𝚂𝚎𝚝”

I originally called my label TVOD after one of my all time favourite records( the one playing now)but also because I realised it could have a different meaning relevant to the shit I went through for wearing makeup and dresses etc. I thought it was ridiculous that cloth cut in a certain way and the hight of a heel on a foot shaped shoe should have any relevance to the sex of a person, so my interpretation of TVOD was TransVestite OverDose. ꓄ꃴꂦꀸ
I wanted to make clothes , not dictate lifestyle or ₴ɆӾɄ₳Ⱡł₮Ɏ etc.
The band happened because I’m a megalomaniac and wanted my own music to accompany the clothes.
We played our first gig at 𝔗𝔥𝔢 𝔗𝔬𝔯𝔱𝔲𝔯𝔢 𝔊𝔞𝔯𝔡𝔢𝔫 when it was in the west end. Brilliant club.
I printed some rubber and ƬΣЯЯY DΣ ΉΛVIᄂᄂΛПD made me these amazing rubber boots with TVOD all over them. Unfortunately, as I eventually worked out, I needed special ink that would stick to rubber.The ink I used wore off within a couple of weeks. ( sad face emoji )
Anyway these shots are from a gig at Club UK in Wandsworth a few months later.

Back to the future again. I remember having the flu or something this night. I slept before the gig. Played , then beer turned up and the flu left me alone for a bit until the drive back to London which again I spent horizontal and sick as ……

I’m fully Westwooded up again here.
I really liked this collection as ,to me, it looked at the whole sport,jocks fake athleticism vibe and subverted it. All the Kieth Haring prints placed it in a different universe. It wasn’t purely functional, it looked at a prevailing trend and took it somewhere else.
It was beautifully un Sporting.
The shoes were amazing. Square toed 3 tongue ‘trainers’ !
I remember lending the jacket to a girl I was seeing at the time and unfortunately never got it back!

𝙲𝙰𝚂𝙷 𝙵𝚁𝙾𝙼 𝙲𝙷𝙰𝙾𝚂 🧷

I was in a band in Liverpool called Black ( we were The epileptic Tits then The Tilt then Black ) but then I got into art college. What to do? Dilemma!
I went to back to Liverpool to practice and play gigs but after my first year I decided to leave and see what I could create on my own. I love music but I’m more visual.
The singer in Black wrote everything and he was a real genius but I didn’t feel like I was contributing much plus we were miles apart aesthetically and from my perspective If I ever became ‘famous’ , I wanted to show up as myself.
They had a number 1 record and it’s a really beautiful song , but I couldn’t have shown up on Top of the Pops in a tuxedo!
Anyway at art college I joined another band and a when I left we got signed to EG/ Polydor records ( same label as Killing Joke hence the song. I remember me a Raven trying to come up with a band with 2 Bass players. )
It wasn’t that different creativity from my Liverpool band but it was much more my thing and once again, the singer was and still is a genius. That band was called Blazetroopers and this pic is from that time.
The singer is Simon Warner and I still think he’s a genius and has written some of the best songs I’ve ever heard.
Having posted this after Pam left the building, I wish I’d mentioned to her that I play the bass. Maybe that’s why I’m mentioning it now. What I mean is that you only ever meet the latest version of a person and maybe we should fill in the blanks
All of us have history. We all liked shit bands and had questionable fashion sense and we all evolve and change.
Clothing vibe - Westwood/McLaren. Another couple of geniuses with Vivienne acing Malcom in my mind.
I think it’s important to acknowledge the people whose work, views, lifestyle etc impacted you.
It’s an overused quote but we are all ‘standing on the shoulders of giants’
.
We’re an iteration of an earlier rebellion and if the rebellion had a point, we all need to be the cavalry, the full stop, the change.

Sorry to hear that the legendary Pam Hogg has left the building.
She’s known more for her fashion designs but fiercely creative across many art forms.
In the 90s she took a break from fashion and formed ‘Doll’ who were immediately asked to support Debbie Harry.
I took these photos for her when she performed at Submission in London.
Really sad to see her go but her work will inspire future generations for years to come.

2nd year at art college. Photoshoot with my girlfriend in my first proper flat. ( I’d lived at the YMCA for the first year )
Upping my Westwood game having got 2 part time jobs and living on college food , beans on toast and getting to know a really cool guy at Worlds End called Gene Krell.
I’d spent my childhood wondering why men got shit clothes and no freedom of expression and from punk onwards I felt like I had ( or had a chance ) at aesthetic parity with women.
Although , as I discovered, other men hadn’t quite worked this shit out and I ended up in hospital on one occasion and in fights I didn’t initiate on many occasions.
I remember thinking it was strange that Men who genuinely believed themselves be ‘normal’ would attack you because they didn’t like your outfit!

I’d just left home at this point. Loved Westwood/McLaren and was finally getting to be myself.
No plans at this point, just optimism and a great bunch of friends on the same trajectory.
Oh, and beer by the looks of things !
I remember randomly writing to Vivienne Westwood and being amazed that she sent me a load of fabric off cuts , some of which I made into the socks in this pic.
I think this photo just reminded me how important it is to keep evolving. Non of us should feel obliged to be the person our parents envisioned. Your life is a blank canvas and you need to do whatever you want with it.
Older people are great at passing on quantifiable facts but not great at guidance when they’re basing the advice on their own outdated world views and experiences and haven’t noticed things have changed.

I met Juliet at The Iceni in Mayfair London at an amazing night called Hollywood Babylon @andykooky in the 90s.
One of the most genuine people I’ve ever met. She modelled for me at my 3001 show and the previous one Superstars
A few years later she started a production company called Prettybird and has produced some of the coolest films and videos over the last 15 years for artists including Beyoncé FKA twigs Harry Styles, Rihanna/Calvin Harris etc in a big way. Check her out.
