talked to @bbcaccessall @bbcnews Emma Tracey and Beth Rose about medical gaslighting and oooops my own personal story fell out.

i’ve been ashamed of my period for 20 years. not because of family (i mean my dad would shout down the supermarket aisle to ask which “things” i wanted and he’d always be the first one to go the corner shop for emergency pads and tampons) but because deep down i knew something wasn’t right. stuffing me knickers with bog roll, refusing PE because i didn’t want to be laughed at for having an accident, writhing in pain from 13 for me and my concerned mum to be told Yasmin/Microgynon/Lucette would sort me out. spoilers, it didn’t.

at drama school i developed sepsis due to a burst endometrioma and i remember returning back and explaining to my year what had happened to dispel myth and try and shun personal shame to be met by mockery and laughter from a certain select group of men.

i’m even typing this right now after a huge endo flooding accident this morning, simultaneous numbness and pain in both my legs (a mere fourth month old new symptom fgs) due to a flare. this condition doesn’t discriminate. even in taking back the power, grappling to have my autonomy back, the endo/adeno agents of chaos sisters are playing silly buggers not letting me just have like one goddamn second you know.

anyway, what a pleasure to be working on @twriter14 new adaptation of The Secret Garden talking about this very thing. medical gaslighting is an extremely important topic, and we are doing this amazing play where i am hearing children react in real time to the perpetrators of it, of medical control, and of a young shut-away boy telling his father there is more to life than being shut away in dark rooms being afraid of who might see you or what might happen.

because although naturally i’m afraid of my health (i’d be a psychopath if i wasn’t) and i get tired of the endless advocacy, but i’m no longer afraid of shame, ridicule or being seen myself. this - me, endometriosis and adenomyosis - aren’t conditions to be shunned to drunken women’s corners or tampons shoved up sleeves. it’s serious.

last week i represented @equity_ddmc at the @tradesunioncongress Disabled Workers Conference, speaking to our motion “Always Audience, Never Artists” about the Access to Work crisis, particularly for self employed artists.

it’s a very difficult time to be heard as a disabled artist. our issues are being sidelined, minimised, deprioritised, ignored. now more than ever we must shout louder and louder, as a collective, so that those who seek to drown us out cannot. this is my contribution to that

This is perhaps one of the most vulnerable things I've ever written. I put my heart and soul into it and honestly I am disappointed with the lack of engagement. Not to make it about optics, but the stats are telling. Usually me sharing work on here gets lots of engagement. I am so happy to have so many supportive people in my digital sphere. But I have had 11 likes on this. I have had two messages from people listening to it. People do not want to have the conversation about class. You all want to sweep it under the rug. You all do not want to acknowledge your own financial privilege because you think it negates your own hard work. You do not want to see class as anything else but wealth or lack of. Class is cultural. I am a GOBSHITE. I will forever, and always be, a GOBSHITE. And this GOBSHITE will not shut up ever about class until the serious work is done. I'm here out of spite. Thank you to @rtyds_uk for this opportunity. Thank you to @shooby_cat for being one of the only people I trust to have a decent, progressive conversation with about class. Thank you to @stefodriscoll for working with me on this piece way back when. And to the both of them, and everyone else, on this pioneering Fair Play project. And finally thank you to everyone who's read this, who will go and listen to these four incredibly powerful important testimonies on class, and who will decide, from today, to make it a priority and a centre point of the conversation.
