Quick trip to Colorado for some elevation training, I mean, wedding.

Celebrated a marriage, got in some great runs, spent time with loved ones, and even met my goddaughter Ocean.

Once upon a time, I lived here—packed up and moved just a couple months after graduating high school.

Rode a lot of bulls, trained horses, became certified as a personal trainer, went to college, and even managed to attend a few classes during that time.

Seeing familiar highways and signs made me smile; reminded me of a life I once lived.

I was on my own for the first time ever; paying my own bills and trying to stay out of trouble. Just me and my 80 lb pit bull, Chico. Looking back now, moving away from home at 18 was one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself.

Today is going to be a great day. by @danholguin

I run 100-mile races. I’m on TV. And I’m winging most of it to be honest.
⁣
But my biggest project is a life I’m building from scratch in the mountains.⁣
⁣
Back in 2016, I was starting over. I wrote a letter to myself on how I was gonna start doing things different. ⁣
⁣
I wrote of having control of my time so I could volunteer in my kid’s classroom on Thursdays.⁣
⁣
I wrote of rebuilding my coaching practice that collapsed during the Recession of 2008—the only time my work ever felt like it truly mattered.⁣
⁣
I wrote of leaving the city for a log home in the mountains—where wildlife outnumber people and birdsongs wake you in the morning.⁣
⁣
Now, it’s here. ⁣
And I’m building something generational.⁣
⁣
A place that lives in harmony with the land—guided by the same responsibility its Native People once carried—to give more than I take.⁣
⁣
Long after I’m gone, I want my family to sit on the deck I built with my hands and laugh about that “crazy old man” who preserved a way of living long since traded for modern comforts. ⁣
⁣
𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘢 𝘰𝘧, 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘴 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘸𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘥𝘦 𝘐’𝘭𝘭 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘴𝘪𝘵.⁣
⁣
I want them to read my journals to see the effort, struggles, and enjoyment I had reviving this property into what it became and hopefully be inspired to create a deep connection to the land too. ⁣
⁣
This life isn’t easy. You’ve got to want it. You’ve got to have the tools, the skills, and the resourcefulness to make it out here.⁣
⁣
𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘸𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥𝘯’𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘪𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘺. ⁣
⁣
I’m not here to convince you to do the same but if that’s your thing, I’m glad you’re here. ⁣ taken in Montana by @danholguin

First off, let me say that this was something I did for the first time and never again will I take on a flagstone project 😅⁣
⁣
I wanted a natural curve to the path and the metal edging made that part so simple; I just eyeballed the curve and then cut a 2x4 to my width and matched the railing on the opposite side.⁣
⁣
Pathway dimensions are 46 ft long X 4 ft wide.⁣
⁣
I bought everything at Lowes:⁣
- Metal pathway edging ⁣
- Landscape lights⁣
- Flagstone ⁣
- Airless sprayer ⁣
⁣
Took a lot longer than expected (72 man hours over the span of about 3-4 weeks) due to back ordered materials and weather. ⁣

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how many trees I lose each year to the strong northern winds of winter.

This past year alone, I lost at least 25—A record since I became responsible for this land six years ago.

I’ve realized that if I’m not planting trees as quickly as I’m losing them, there’ll come a time when there aren’t many left.

I want to have the healthiest acreage of forest in the entire Salish Mountain Range.

I want squirrels and birds born into a forest abundant with food. Brook trout thriving in the cold water of Truman Creek as it winds through the property. Wildflowers blanketing the forest floor. A wide variety of trees, berries, and underbrush. And I want the big animals that wander through here to feel safe enough to bed down for an afternoon nap.

I want to leave this little piece of Montana healthier and wilder than I found it.

So if you’ve been trying to reach me over the last few weeks, I’ve probably been out in the forest, listening to the soundtrack of A River Runs Through It and planting as many trees as I can before the snow flies. by @danholguin

200 reviews.

When I was still in high school, I trained horses for a Native couple in Whitefish.

They had this circular house thing on the property and I was always so curious about it. One day, I went inside and immediately fell in love.

Told myself that one day I’d have my own and a short 20 years later we made it happen.

When we first opened this yurt four years ago, I really had no idea what it would become. I just knew I loved how it made me feel inside one and wanted to share that excitement with others.

Since then, hundreds of people have made their way up the mountain. They’ve sat around the fire, watched deer wander through the trees, celebrated birthdays and anniversaries, watched the snow fall on Christmas morning, explored Glacier Park, and hopefully left with a few memories they’ll hang onto forever about their time in Montana.

And somewhere along the way, our little yurt just passed 200 reviews.

I still read every single one.

Pretty damn grateful for everyone who has chosen to spend a few days of their life here. by @danholguin

I was reading through the daily journal I kept while building the log home this morning and was touched by how special my entries were around building the fireplace and figured I’d reshare this video on the build.

Everything you see is intentional. The rock was mined here in Montana and the mantle comes from a local homestead built over 120 years ago. The framed photo on the mantle is Chief Plenty Coup of the Crow People (who I studied extensively a few years ago) and next to him, my late Uncle Rick who introduced me to log home building when I was a young kid. ⁣ by @danholguin

Married my best friend a few days ago—today was the first in five days I woke up feeling rested. What an incredible day we spent with our families and friends.

For those that came out, I am so grateful to have shared such an intentional space with you. The day flew by and so much felt like a blur but I’ll never forget how it made me feel.

More on this later, gotta go finish cleaning up the mess.

Welcome to the TWEET RETREAT!

Had a free afternoon and thought I’d add a little whimsy into the yard so I grabbed a few things and got to work.

This has always been a busy bird area so I added a few birdhouses, a feeder, birdbath, and @metallotuscoach helped me with the new name.

I’m a big fan of creating small environments/ecosystems and this is just another example of having some fun and you can’t help but smile when you see it.

Should I add anything else? by @danholguin

Coming off nearly a week spent at the historic French Chateau du Mont celebrating the marriage of two incredible people.

I always tell people Jeremy is my youngest oldest friend. He’s an old soul in a young body and to me, he’s the fastest man alive. He’s a guy who can talk about anything from Native American history while running through the Bighorns to what/who god might be while pushing a cart through the grocery store. He told me once I was his long lost brother and I couldn’t agree more.

Bree has a radiance about her that makes a guy’s walls go right down. She’s sweet and funny but also blunt and direct. She has the confidence to say things we’re all thinking but don’t have the courage to say out loud. I respect that so much.

I wish you both a lifetime of love and happiness and I’m so honored for thinking of me to be included in your day.

Standing up there and sharing your story will always be one of the things I am most proud of in my life. by @danholguin
