Have you watched my latest music video for @nicky_egan “This Life” ?!

✨

This is such a special project for me. Nicky is one of my dearest friends and longest collaborators. She was one of the first artists to entrust me with making their music videos when I first got started way back in the day. Making art with your friends will remain one of, if not, the greatest gifts in this life.

This project was especially important to me because of subject of Nicky’s beautiful song. She wrote this song about losing a loved one to cancer. The song is about the grief of loss, and how we make sense of that transition from this life to the great unknown.

I wanted to show that vulnerable state we’ve all been in when in the throes of that pain and suffering. Sometimes we just have to take a drive to try and clear our head. Sometimes we have a solitary breakdown and all our feelings come to a head in an overwhelming surge and we feel like we’re drowning, never able to come up for air.

And yet, we somehow do. We somehow persevere, baptized by grief, we reemerge with a new perspective and appreciation for this life.

While this bad boi was released a hot minute ago, I’m trying to get better about posting my work. We shot this video series last summer at Tauk’s gorgeous studio in Long Island.

All of the effects in the video are practical. The highlight of this shoot had to be watching @cohliebrocato transform a leko spotlight into a strobe, shaking it maniacally with his entire body. Pretty sure he turned into that light at one point! Haha.

I’m obsessed with this performance. I mean, KANIKA?! You can’t take your eyes off of her. How mesmerizing and captivating and phantasmagoric all at the same time.

I hope you enjoy(ed)!

This is one of my all time favorite portraits I’ve ever taken to date. If my memory serves me correct, this might’ve been my very first portrait session that I ever did, waaaaaay back in the day, in the late aughts.

My dear friend Lily was kind enough to lend her stunningly, gorgeous face. I mean, her silhouette. The backlight and framing of her balcony window. The light just kissing her closed eyes. Ugh. I die.

In The Bee Gees doc, Chris Martin likens the songwriting process to a surfer. Like a surfer catches waves, a songwriter catches songs. And just like a surfer doesn’t create the wave, the songwriter too, is catching a creative wave.

I feel really lucky that I was present enough at the time to catch this beautiful wave.

Thank you again Lily for trusting me when I was but a young lil whipper snapper lol ilysm 🖤

Oh! And if you’re still reading this rambling post, please go and check out Lily’s music @parlourtricksmusic We made a music video together and that is also still one of my all time favorites. Just YouTube: “Broken Hearts / Bones” By Parlour Tricks by @dani__shoots

@jamescaseysax was a light in this world. To know him is to love him. I first met James when he sat in for one of Turkuaz’s first @brooklynbowl residencies. What a gift to be on the receiving end of his bright, warm smile. Later James would ask me to collaborate on a video series for his solo project @animusrexx

I knew James Casey the Sax player, but DAYUM, this was a WHOLE OTHER realm! I was blown away. I remember having the HARDEST time keeping my camera stable cuz all I wanted to do was move my body cuz the music was so grooving. This was my favorite track from that series of vids we made together. And I mean COME ON, this band!?!are you kidding me?!?

The title of this track hits something wicked today. The little bread crumbs we leave inadvertently, unknowingly.

Thank you James for everything you shared with me. Thank you for teaching me about kindness and grace. I’m gonna really miss seeing that smile of yours light up the room.

Thank you for leaving us out it’s so much of your music to hold you close with.
