Daniel Domig on Painting as Decreation:
Learning to Unmake the Image

Kjell Arnessen (KA) and Daniel Domig (DD)

Kjell Arnessen:
In our previous conversations, you describe painting not as a way of making images but as a way of unmaking them—of ridding yourself of the visual noise that competes for our attention. In a culture saturated with images, what does painting allow you to undo that other media cannot?

Daniel Domig:
I think painting gives me permission to slow down in a way that feels almost oppositional to how images function elsewhere. Most images today ask for immediate legibility—they want to be understood, consumed, categorized. In the studio, I’m not trying to add another image into that stream. I’m trying to subtract myself from it.

KA:
So painting as a way of slowing down? How does that shape your artistic practice?

DD:
Ideally it becomes a way of shedding preexisting pictures—of faces, bodies, even of what a painting is supposed to be—until what’s left is something closer to sensation or presence than representation. It’s not about making a better image of the world, but interrupting my automatic ways of seeing it.

KA:
You invoke Simone Weil’s idea of “decreation,” turning the created back toward its uncreated state. How does this philosophical notion translate into the physical, moment-by-moment decisions you make in the studio—does is impact the composition?

DD:
I think decreation shows up less as an idea I consciously apply and more as a discipline of restraint and undoing. It’s in moments where I realize a form is becoming too certain, too descriptive, and I have to work against it—smear it, overpaint it, thicken it, let it collapse back into paint.

Daniel Domig’s work sits deep within the body, inviting us to engage with it sensually over aesthetically. There is a pulsating life force within his canvases, an energy of reproduction, growth, ferment. Shapes overlap intimately, encouraging organic—even magic—coexistence and communion.

‘Living Room I, Living Room II’ and a collection of Domig's paintings are currently on display for CHALK HORSE’s Level Two showing.

To Look Is To Eat
2025 / oil on linen / 200cm x 180cm

To Look Is To Eat
late have I loved | long have I waited | last have I come | with my great ring of keys | chatelaine of some | sea-washed keep | woken from some | gorged | dream | the lads set nets | all along the coastline | white shores writ with kelp | the call of love | smoothed under keel | oysters | grey and living | all I want tonight | to be netted as a drowned boy | brought back to his mother | the night-sea’s kind poverty | a kicked up love | on which you cannot look

Exercises in Decreation

“Exercises in Decreation is not just a title; it is a
practice: an invitation to look, to feel, and to meet
the work in the shared space between presence and
absence, attention and creation.”
Kjell Arnessen (Copenhagen 2025)

On view until 1 April 2026.

All Truth Contains A Contradiction
2025 / oil on linen / 200cm x 180cm

All Truth Contains A Contradiction
(with lines from Catherine Pickstock)

where shall I flee? | you I desire | from you I am running | I cannot bring my head in hand | too proud | too clean | with my damp veil | and fresh cut rosemary | it is you I’m here to meet | I did not ask for this | to be on the way | to live yet | desire ending | o garden path | first breath of spring | tired of beginning | and beginning | all shall be well | everything lever-cold | ever image-bearing | to arrive is beginning | and we have only ever just begun | there is no other way to be, than to be on the way

To Love a Stranger like Oneself
2025 / oil on linen / 200cm x 180cm

To Love a Stranger like Oneself
Matins/Lauds/Prime | life’s eager dive towards meaning | I want so badly to be kind | us both, these lines | set | a life’slonely building | red-faced | all aflutter | risen indeed | so much salt | so much talking | I have None to give | the eager space between my chin and chest | my night sweats | a lovekiss | soap | gold rings | come under my roof | stillness |dancing |o stumbled home deadbeat | I am not worthy | say the word | I shall be clean

OPENING!

Daniel Domig
Exercises in Decreation

Thu, 12 Feb 2026 - 7 pm

GALERIE3 Wien is kicking off the new year with Daniel Domig. Following solo exhibitions in Beijing and Sydney, his latest works are now on display again in his hometown. Domig, whose work is characterized by an oscillation between abstract and figurative painting, often deals with the encounter of bodies, relationships, and communication that does not require language. Under the title “Exercises in Decreation,” this exhibition also deals with the dissolution of the image.
