A while back, we met with Daniel Domig at his studio in Vienna.

Daniel’s paintings return again and again to the human body, but never as straightforward anatomy. Figures bend into one another, appear and disappear, leaving us to question where one person ends and another begins.

Studio visits like this are always a wonderful way for us to gain a deeper understanding of an artist’s work. Seeing Daniel’s paintings up close allowed us to look beyond the finished surface, to understand how these bodies are built through paint and to hear more about the ideas and decisions behind them.

Thank you for welcoming us into your studio, Daniel.

What started as an artist-run experiment has become one of Sydney's enduring contemporary galleries. Since 2007, CHALK HORSE has evolved from an independent project space into a commercial gallery recognised for its thoughtful programme and commitment to Australian artists.

Having exhibited at every Sydney Contemporary since the inaugural Fair, the gallery has grown alongside the event. This year, CHALK HORSE returns to Sydney Contemporary with an expanded presentation across two booths, bringing together painting, sculpture, ceramics and works on paper.

Galleries booth presents Adrian Jangala Robertson, Mechelle Bounpraseuth, Laura Jones, Emily Ferretti, Jasper Knight, Jason Phu, Allery Sandy, Danny Morse, Billy Benn, Harry McAlpine, Daniel Domig, Sam Doctor and Oliver Watts.

Works on Paper presents etchings by Robertson and Billy Benn, alongside works by Dean Brown.

See CHALK HORSE at Sydney Contemporary, 3–6 September at Carriageworks.

I got caught out in the rain. Sought refuge here. Found so many incredible pieces that sparked joy on a cloudy grey day. #localart #localgallery #sydneygallery #sydneylocal #australianart

Daniel Domig’s work sits deep within the body, inviting us to engage with it sensually over aesthetically. There is a pulsating life force within his canvases, an energy of reproduction, growth, ferment. Shapes overlap intimately, encouraging organic—even magic—coexistence and communion.

‘Living Room I, Living Room II’ and a collection of Domig's paintings are currently on display for CHALK HORSE’s Level Two showing.

DAS DAMISCHE ADERL

@martinasteckholzer

"With Martina Steckholzer painting is documentary, deconstructive and poetic. In large-format room images, she looks at exhibition architecture and stages of contemporary discourse. Steckholzer empties, abstracts and generates space. To do this, she uses the most minimal tool in painting: pigment, dense or flowing on the surface. Empty as they are, the picture spaces become open stages and foreboding documentary traces. An affirmative and projective type of institutional criticism is emerging."

"Malerei beginnt für mich in dem Moment, in dem die ursprüngliche Idee zusammenbricht. Was darauf folgt, ist keine Ausführung, sondern ein Dialog mit dem Unbekannten."

ROBB REPORT AWARD, USA I WINNER

Thrilled to win The Robb Report’s Best of the Best: Design award in the Home category for our Plantasia project. Just sorry not to have been in New York this week for the festivities!

Super special to see this residence recognised amongst international contenders by a leading voice in global luxury. Many thanks to all the editorial team for this accolade.

“When Australia’s YSG Studio opted to call their reno of this 6,210-square-foot vacation home in New South Wales Plantasia, it lived up to the name: a lush, verdant oasis that feels like it sprang from the landscape like the conical red blooms of the banksia shrub.” Robb Report

Big shout out to our clients who let our imaginations run wild, and to the YSG team for their inexhaustible energy.
