Ivan surprised me with custom 3D printed end caps for the synth stand. A true friend.

Also: Ballard Marine Fabricators helped me out by laser cutting the center of the aluminum cross brace. I spent so many days emailing shops and calling engravers … no luck. So I hopped on my bike last week and pedaled my way to Ballard, walking into the shop unannounced like a nutty UW professor on his daily Burke-Gilman Trail commute. I pulled the aluminum cross-brace from my backpack, pre-marked with the required cut. Chris @ballardmarinefab was happy to help. Three cheers for going offline and in-person to get things done and meet cool people! taken in Seattle, Washington by @daniel.spils

We recently bought a record player. So far it’s been Brangien’s high school albums that her stepdad Terry shipped to us a while back. That collection stops in 1986 (not a bad constraint!). But I’ve been to a couple Goodwills this week for $0.99 records and today we bought the Brother’s Johnson from the $1 rack at Backstreet Beat on Bainbridge. I had to learn Strawberry Letter 23 for my first cover band in Anchorage in 1992-ish because the bass player knew how to play that classic bass line. He worked as a dump truck driver 2 weeks on (Barrow … now Utqiagvik)/2 weeks off (Anchorage). Our first gig as “Black Ice” was at The Underground on Spenard Road. He told me to not play so many notes when he was soloing. He was right and I changed my playing as a result.

I’m also on a mini classical music kick (always been a Beethoven-head) and this Schubert had such a cool cover that I had to buy it yesterday at Ballard Goodwill.

Not sure where the record player will take us but we sure are enjoying listening to music together. The Brothers Johnson album is a winner. taken in Backstreet Beat by @daniel.spils

Peanut-butter-meets-chocolate in this marrying of the Hammond M-Solo and Crumar Burn. These adhesive cable clips are magic. And I didn’t solder a single cable—the red and black 1/4” cables just happened to be the correct length.

If this gear were simply in the basement I wouldn’t go to the trouble, but when setting up for a show, panic sets in and that moment I can’t recall where all the cables go. Cable management is my way out of chaos. taken in Seattle, Washington by @daniel.spils

With percussion on and the drawbars in, the B3 organ produces haunting ghost notes. Pull out the lowest drawbar, and flip the Leslie to fast spinning mode and it gets pretty groovy (and changes keys while playing the same physical notes on the keyboard). A splash of reverb from the Crumar Burn ties both parts together. Good times!

I recently bought a Crumar Burn Leslie speaker simulator. A Leslie is the spinning speaker that is typically paired with the Hammond B3 organ to give it its distinctive sound. As a recovering B3/Leslie player (I’m a hack, really) this is the first time I’ve found a compact rig that competently mimics those two classic pieces of gear. I know there are many options out there, but I’ve settled on this odd couple and I appreciate the size, weight, functionality (love the optional half-moon switch!), and most importantly: sound.

Although the built-in Leslie simulator on the Hammond M-Solo is totally fine, it can’t hold a candle to the Burn. Good work whoever designed the Burn!

17th anniversary walk to a fave perch of ours on the Puget Sound. This seal keeps popping its head up to check us out. Maybe we’re in HIS fave perch. A lotta eye contact! taken in Discovery Park by @daniel.spils

Playing the JX-3P at Kevin’s stellar new house. Just look at this kitchen! I like playing synths in the wild — small improv pieces with no effects. This is the truest sound of a synthesizer. taken in Silverdale, Washington by @daniel.spils

My dad bought this Panasonic VCR from Magnum Electronics (not Magnavox!) in Anchorage around 1982. Star Wars had just been released in VHS and the salesman gave us a free multi-day rental with the purchase of the Magnavox. A tectonic shift in movie watching!
