I visited the @museelouvre during the summer and when I saw this piece I had immediately a vision that brought me to paint my recent painting .
This weird sculpture represents the 12 pagan’s Gods and my imagination saw a dark lake in the center from where we all come from .. the presence of the pagan’s myths is present in our minds (western colture)and I believe that we are very influenced by them .
I don’t know .. I just painted what I imagined. by @daniela_astone

"There is something strangely timeless about Italian artist Daniela Astone’s paintings. Rooted in the traditions of classical figurative art yet untethered from the constraints of reality, her figures inhabit mysterious worlds where gravity seems optional, scale shifts, and fragments of landscape, memory, and imagination converge. Beautifully rendered bodies possess the solidity of sculpture, while the spaces surrounding them resist easy interpretation. They feel at once ancient and contemporary – glimpses into what Daniela describes as a “collective dream.”

“I think about the dialogue between me and the canvas.”

For Daniela Astone, painting begins with an idea, a blank canvas, and a willingness to listen.

From collecting fragments of the world around her. Words, people, movement, moments to building mood boards and creating a visual collage, Daniela lets everything flow into the canvas without overthinking.

Born in Porto Santo Stefano, Italy, Daniela studied illustration and classical painting before becoming Director of the Intermediate Program at the Florence Academy of Art. Since dedicating herself fully to her practice in 2021, her work has continued to be exhibited internationally, including at the National Portrait Gallery in London and MEAM in Barcelona.

Her paintings become a subconscious vision, an honest conversation between what she sees, what she feels, and what emerges from within.

New episode of The Figurative Easel Podcast is out, watch the full interview with Daniela Astone on YouTube (link in bio 🔗) and now on Spotify too!

In our 1-hour long conversation, we had the chance to talk about creativity. Among other questions, I asked her how to let creativity flow within an academic environment built on rigid rules and painting strictly from reality. Her answer somehow surprised me: even something as simple as a still life can become a dialogue with your inner voice, and you might not even realize what you were really painting until months later.

Daniela Astone is an Italian figurative painter and former teacher at the Florence Academy of Art, where she taught for about 20 years before leaving to focus entirely on her own art practice. In this episode of The Figurative Easel Podcast, I travelled to Daniela’s home art studio in the Tuscan countryside for an in-depth conversation about her artistic journey.
