Introducing Serica, a uniwidth dot matrix type family with three shape styles and 7/9 weights plus a Variable Font.

By avoiding any overlapping strokes, it reinterprets the historic reference to Dutch merklap embroidery through a contemporary lens. The reduction to a 7 unit tall cap height necessitates steep angles in diagonals and provides a rhythmic texture, which can be tamed by the SS01 for circular shapes or SS02 for compact shapes.

It provides an abundance of features such as localization, swashes, ligatures, alternative letters, compact shapes, number styles, emojis and more. In total, Serica comes with 1150 Glyphs.

Out now: Memoir is a free typeface for the nostalgic beholder.

Roman proportions, slight stroke contrast and melting joints render it warm and gentle, opening a gate into the past - sometimes blurry, sometimes sharp. Although being open source it covers 257 Languages/Dialects (2.7b speakers) and basic punctuation, making it available for a large audience using the latin script.

No lowercase or further weights planned. If you need them for your project though, reach out to me for a quote.

In Development: Grandessa. A type with flared serifs and flipped roman proportions.
For now it comes with 170 Glyphs, supporting 85 languages in tightly spaced uppercase letters - already working on the lowercase which is going to follow, likewise more weights.

The project started probably 1 1/2 ago, its outlines emerge from a handmade lettering found on the Book ‘Gone With The Wind’ by Margaret Mitchel. Stopped reading the book but kept a scan of its backside, traced the original outlines, decided they can stay in the past and worked out the typeface towards an appearance that makes fun of its majestic touch.

The contrast between 'noble' classical proportions and the flip some letters have seemed so silly that I decided to exchange ZZ by SS - it seems like an intervention of appropriate naivety. Anyway, it deserves a sibling called Grandezza with ‘correct' proportions. Bonus: It sounds much cooler.

Grandezza is a german term borrowed from italian which has been used in the 18th-20th century to express 'majestic and dignified elegance of demeanour or movement’. In italian it simply means ‘greatness’ in matters of size. I found the term while reading a book from 1958, which in the respective sentence, described a cat. I was catched by the word immediately, then it appeared again in a soccer documentary the next and here we are.

Calmar, a humanist sans with minimal contrast, large counters. and x-height, as well as very short descenders. It’s a charming one really, kind of confidently smiling at its reader. I kerned it rather loose to leave the decision up to you as how tight you want it - works also well with negative tracking!

When still studying I was looking up archive material and found the silent film La Pieuvre by Jean Painlevé from 1928, which shows an octopus and is accompanied by title sequences, which were hand drawn → which, you guessed it, informed the design of Calmar.

I guess we all agree that figuring out pricing sucks, which is why I’ve spent several months with Rebecca and Rebecca from @behindtscope to build an online calculator for creative services.

It works like so: Each service has a base price which is multiplied with factors for experience, location (client and creative), client industry, client size and more. This results in a proce which is supposed to be fair, cause the calue of your design grows with audience it is projected to.

My type fellows can imagine, it has its root in the font licensing approach championed by @abcdinamo @mass.driver and more, just a little adjusted.

Introducing Bougie, a WIP type that provides more – more craftsmanship, more embellishment, and seemingly more prosperity. It’s swashy style corresponds well with @ssense 's culture prediction: “As everything we eat and drink becomes functional, we’ll see a growing appreciation of useless things. Useless is the new luxury.” So here you go, I’m curious how you can make use of this useless font.

Guided by the original Letraset sheets of Magnificat by Friedrich Peter, this first version of Bougie is very close to the original and underwent just a few interventions here and there (bigger diacritics, smoothed bezier’s, ..). The single style font supports 238 latin languages/dialects (2.2b speakers) and received some new diacritics and characters. There is still much to do, but its ornamental nature covers deficiencies with glamour. :)
