Exciting life update: I’m in a book (again, fun fact! @myfatherslist 🩵)

I connected with @hilarytopper originally as a fellow @shokzusa ambassador, and I love her approach to sport and her celebration of all types of athletes, their journey, and their goals 🩵 in an odd twist of fate, towards the end of last year my friend Barry asked in a local (Philly area) Facebook group about inviting Hilary out to our neck of the woods to discuss her book, Unlocking the Triathlon. In the midst of all of that, Hilary also asked to interview me for her upcoming book, aptly named “Unlocking the Open Water Swim”. I talked about my path in swimming, from summers at Hideaway Swim Club because my mom wanted me and my brother not watching TV all day every day of summer, to smashing into a wall my second week of freshman year at Lafayette College and losing my prospects in Division 1 swimming, to returning to the pool via an “I can do that too” moment with sprint triathlons, to learning about marathon swimming and completing the first of the Triple Crown almost a year ago today. However, what I’m the most proud of is this: Hilary has a deep sense for knowing people, and she put my story in the chapter entitled “Having Fun with Open Water”.

That’s what it’s about.

An absolute honor and quite surreal. Thank you Hilary and @meyer_meyer_sport 🏊‍♀️🩵 the book releases in October; I’ll link the pre-order in my storied and profile! I’ve done some skimming but haven’t read the whole book yet, so I’ll provide a chatting with the camera review later in September. That said, on first impression, I genuinely blown away at the balance Hilary struck of being meticulously thorough AND widely approachable to so many in or entering sport involving open water. It covers starting entirely new to how to conquer your triathlon swim to ultra-marathons. I’m truly in awe and it’s been such a joy to call Hilary a friend. Thank you.

I did write a song parody to express how I feel about this, but I need to put that together… Meme Monday?????

Absolutely speechless. 20 Bridges Manhattan swim. 28.5? 29.2? miles around the perimeter of the island. The hardest day & the proudest of my life. Nothing but gratitude. 8:06:20 finish time (beat my expected of 8:09)!

More later. Right now, thank you. 🏊‍♀️🌊🩵

My year of recovery after attempting suicide is my greatest accomplishment.

Last year at @brooksrunning #camprunhappy I asked @jeffreybinney what he did in his 100 milers when things got hard. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: he gave the answer I didn’t want to hear. He told me, and all of us, to remember our why.

My why is that I’ve survived 3 concussions and a suicide attempt, and I’m still here.

Suicide is not selfish. It is not cowardly. I was in so much pain there was nothing I felt could fix it. But I asked for help, started intensive group therapy, and no race day or rough time can take that from me. I have climbed my way from rock bottom into a career I love, training for cool events, having awesome opportunities, and such a strong, beautiful community… but most importantly, I’m doing the work to heal my relationship with myself.

I firmly believe that is a lifelong journey, but I did a lot of really difficult work on that front from 2021-2022. I still have anxiety, depression, and am a deeply flawed human being. But I’m still here, I’m working on things, and I’m living out loud.

Here’s to another year of healing and working toward some really badass goals.

I tried to run 20 miles today, and burnout won.

I made it to ten before nausea, lightheadedness, and exhaustion forced me to stop. I will do everything in my power to finish NYC, but the depth of my burnout across all areas of my life is really showing and I am so depleted.

I love running for the process, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t also want the positive outcome and the praise, especially when I feel so tired, isolated, and behind in so many other parts of my life. Probably incorrectly, I was excited to get praise for completing 20 miles today, and then I didn’t.

I’m burnt out from constantly figuring things out, picking myself back up, and making plans B through Z. I’m tired of being called strong when what I really need is help.

I want people to check in, have real conversations, and see me as a person beyond my accomplishments and especially beyond “enduring”.

I’m changing my handle from Danielle Endures to something that resonates more for me. I still believe in endurance sports and the hard work they demand. I will keep the endure legacy via Endure Swim Coaching, where my goal is to keep exploring how we can pursue difficult goals while making room for humanity, joy, and community.

But I’m rejecting the idea that I have to endure everything in my life.

I haven’t signed up for a single 2027 race nor do I want to. Right now, I need Danielle the Human to BE, not perform.

I don’t want my whole life to be about how much I can withstand. I want to actually enjoy it, too.

I’m tired, I need help, and I simply don’t know what to do at this point.

Marathon training has been far from ideal this cycle. A back to back health whammy of an appendicitis scare followed directly by being rear ended resulting in a concussion set me back quite a bit, and this year was and still is very turbulent outside of that.

But end of the day…. I run for her. I run for the middle and high schooler who did hurdles but always eyed the distance runners and wondered if that’s what I was built for (correct). I run for the girl who felt too much pressure in swimming and who still loves the sport but finds humanity much more accessible on the roads and trails. I run for the 24 year old version of myself who did her first triathlon in 2019 in a swimsuit, lifeguard shorts, the family mountain bike, and a heap of optimism. Hell, I run for the woman who wakes up every morning, takes on life the best she can, and looks at herself in the mirror at night knowing she put in effort, continues to learn and stay curious, and stands on the business that she talks AND walks (and runs).

I don’t run to be the best- I run to be the adult that younger me would have lost her 💩 with excitement knowing she’d grow up to become. I GET to run. I also have a lot I’m proud of this training cycle, but we can talk about that after my last long run this weekend!!

It’s Winnie the Pooh’s 100th birthday!! I’ve been a massive fan of the Hundred Acre Wood squad since I was a little girl, and it’s so cool to see a character I love so much turn 100. 💛🍯🐝

Our bodies build in between the workouts, and we need fuel to properly recover and get fit for our goals! I’ve been really enjoying @swoop_better frozen desserts after my runs! I often don’t feel hungry or the idea of eating after a run is just not appealing to me, but Swoop has been the perfect mix of light, craveable, and protein-packed for me to enjoy after my training runs for the New York City Marathon. Swoop is available in six flavors at Target- get yours today!

POV: I GET TO DO THIS!!!

I’m going to be so for real: I was really unsure how I’d feel about marathon training … turns out I love it!!!! We’ll see how I feel about the race distance itself - I adore half marathon training but don’t like racing for 13.1. I think being on my feet longer suits me better so I’m feeling optimistic!!!

Something in me just felt … lighter … on this run.

I’ve been dealing with a lot, and working hard on breaking some very specific cycles in my life. I’ve been worried I wouldn’t get my fitness back after the concussion; while I’m not at “peak”, this is a run I’m so proud of and I am finally seeing my paces drop again!!

Ready to rip @nycmarathon !!!! 🗽🏃‍♀️ two long runs to go for me :)

It’s Feature Friday (Sunday. Better late!)

In endurance sport and everything else, we all start somewhere! Each of these athletes is preparing for or completed a big first, which is such a unique moment of pride and the culmination of years of hard work.

Swipe to see what Caelyn, Bec, Brandon, and Ash are up to and send them a big cheer!! 📣 by @danielle.being

Hi from Salem 🐦‍⬛🖤🐈‍⬛

Visiting Salem during spooky season has been at the top of my US travel bucket list for a long time. Ironically, I think I’d actually prefer the city any other time of year (minus a blizzard), but it’s a stunning way to kick off October. Also- of course the wharf was my favorite part, pondering, “I could swim that”.

Excited to visit more of Western PA and wrap up one whirlwind of a marathon training cycle. taken in Salem, Massachusetts by @danielle.being

Perspective matters, and it’s part of my core philosophy as both an athlete and a coach.

This photo? The photographer, who I’m lucky to call my friend (Colman fan club!!!! Not on IG), told me this was my favorite photo he took of me during the Bender Memorial 8 mile swim. That I looked strong and at ease.

All I could see was my stupid hair pushing out of my swim cap. If you’ve been here any period of time, though, you know I possess a very strong minded inner critic that I fight on a regular basis.

You never know who is watching, who is seeing what you say and do and how you treat people and this great big world around us. At the same time, you absolutely know who is watching, and that matters.

Just a thought without too massive of a conclusion at the moment, which works for me. I haven’t swam at all since this and honestly, haven’t missed it much. I’m really enjoying running right now 🩵 taken in Schuylkill River by @danielle.being
