10k race recap!!! (11 k with all that zigzagging😂)

The first 5k was downstream. The water was a very nice 77, but boy did I miss that clear lake water. Nothing like staring at brown gunk for 3.5 hours. After Wednesday’s storm the flow rate was 3,000 cfs. In other words, the skook was flowingggg. So the first 5k was a blast. My dad was my kayaker, and the first 3 feeds were seamless. We got down the river in under 90 minutes.

Upstream: the battle begins.
The first 1.5 miles back weren’t bad at all. My pace slowed, but I chipped away steadily. Then mile 5 got really hard. I had my watch set to autolaps to help me see where I was distance wise. Jokes on me, I hit 6.2 miles .8 from the finish with all my zigzagging LOL. The river going west by trooper gets VERY shallow and narrow. So it was a LOT of water in a very small part of the river. It felt like an endless pool treadmill for a good mile. As I got tired I stopped spotting and started veering forwards my right. Not sure if I have a really strong left stroke, I’m a horrible spotter or something else happens when I get tired. Lots to work on:) Mentally I was singing Ellie Goulding and doing swimmer math to get myself through 😂.

All in all- it was a blast (mile 6 Sadie might say otherwise). My favorite part of this sport is that there is always something to learn.

Open water swimming is beautiful because no one race is the same. The conditions are up to Mother Nature, and you can’t always prepare for it. I love that it’s just you and your kayaker out there. You’ve got to love the process because when you’re in it, it’s tough!

My first marathon race and I cannot wait for more. 10 miler soon?

Thank you all for your good luck wishes :) I felt each and every one of them during those 3.5 hours. I am so blessed to be surrounded by so many amazing people❤️.

Here’s your encouragement to go do hard things! Set a goal for yourself and learn more about yourself as you go along. It is pretty darn cool completing something that you’ve worked so hard for. If you ever want to venture into the world of open water swimming I’m your girl;).

Let’s do it again next year!
