POSTS STORIES REELS
Meet the most phenomenal women who are surfing through cancer It’s Breast Cancer Awareness month in the US, and on this week’s newsletter we are privileged to not only have @danielle.cass guest posting, but she has also brought the stories of four other women, all of whom are surfing through one of the most unimaginably hard journeys: navigating cancer. Danielle is our next guest on the podcast. She started surfing at 52, and then a year ago found out she had advanced breast cancer, and decided to surf through her treatment. In the process of her journey she has met or spoken to so many women around the world who have also chosen to retain their sense of self through their cancer journey through continuing to embrace the waves, that we had to feature them. I feel so privileged that these women have agreed to share their story with us. Stories that remind us to get checked more frequently, stories that show that we can retain some sense of agency as the world falls apart around our ears, stories that give some inspiration to others when life feels hopeless. We will be hosting a live panel with this group towards the end of the month in the hope that it helps others through their journey, more news to come on this. In the meantime thank you again to Danielle, Melanie, Lottie, Ellen, and Caroline - link to the story is in the @boardwomen profile and on stories x @yogasurfmel @lotlewis @EllenMcLaughlin9097 #podcast #breastcancer #breastcancerawareness #surfing by @danielle.cass
“I need to surf as much as possible while I still can” is one heavy statement. And it’s the first thought @danielle.cass had when a routine mammogram last year revealed a tumor. Several months later she has chemo, a mastectomy, and lymph node removal under her belt along with one amazing story of returning to the ocean. Surfing Through Cancer 🌊 Danielle discovered surfing at 52 - and quickly fell in love with the strength and freedom it gave her. When she was diagnosed with breast cancer, she refused to give it up. Instead, surfing became part of her healing journey. In her story for @theinertia and on her Substack, Danielle shares how she surfed through treatment - and why her oncologist encourages cancer patients to stay physically active to help offset the side effects of chemotherapy. Read her inspiring story at the link in her bio 🏄‍♀️ by @danielle.cass
“I am showing up flat. I am showing up whole.” When surfer @danielle.cass was diagnosed with breast cancer, she chose to go flat after a double mastectomy. Through surgery and chemotherapy, the ocean and her surf community helped her stay connected to her body and the life she loves. November is Go Flat Month, and we’re opening i love flatties! with Danielle’s words on choice, community, and feeling beautiful and strong without breasts. 💚 Read her story, “You Don’t Need Breasts to Feel Beautiful and Strong,” at the link in bio. “I’m 57 now, nothing in my life has been such a complete head over heels identifying change as learning to surf in midlife. It has been so empowering and it colours everything about my identity which is why I refuse to give it up” It’s amazing how something can become your whole identity, even though you’ve only discovered it in your 50’s. That’s what happened with @Danielle.cass and surfing (I’m sure we can all relate). So imagine being told you might not be able to do that thing that has come to define you. Imagine telling your medical team you refuse to give up the thing you love, and that they need to find a way to make it work. Danielle’s story is a phenomenal one (to be honest, even just her story of diving head long into surfing at 52 would be inspiring enough). Make sure you make the time to listen to this one! “It reminded me to just accept things that are bigger than you that you have no control over. Isn’t that what surfing is? You can’t control the waves, you have to work with them. Such a metaphor for cancer.” THIS WEEK’S PODCAST EPISODE IS LIVE!!!! We interview ever inspiring @Danielle.cass about her journey surfing through cancer. Danielle started surfing at 52, became utterly obsessed, and then a year ago got an advanced breast cancer diagnosis. Her first statement to the team caring for her? I want to surf through my treatment. This is an interview that will put your life into perspective. We talk about: - Danielle’s journey into surfing at 52 - Her crew of surf sisters & organising life around her passion - Receiving her diagnosis and how surfing helped her - Why she started to document her journey - Finding a community of women also surfing through cancer It’s a wonderful story, and Danielle continues to help other women who are navigating the same challenges. WARNING: THIS INTERVIEW IS SERIOUSLY INSPIRING Next week’s podcast guest is the formidable @danielle.cass She started surfing at 52, and if that wasn’t badass enough, a year ago she received a diagnosis of advanced breast cancer, and her first statement to her medical team was “I’m going to surf through it”.

What makes me love her most is that she could have been entirely forgiven for wanting to retreat to her own bubble, get on with her treatment, surf when she could, and that would be the end of it. But she’s chosen to do so much more than that. Documenting her journey through film, photography and her beautiful words. Connecting with women all over the world who have also surfed through cancer, and inspiring others to do the same. Because evidence increasingly shows that not only is it great for you medically to continue with activity, it’s clear a phenomenal way to keep some sense of agency and of self. Bravo to these women. Make sure you listen out for this one next wednesday - subscribe to the podcast or the newsletter (or both - linked in the profile for @boardwomen) - so you don’t miss it. And get your tissues ready, because I defy anyone not be moved by Danielle’s story. Feeling blown away by the strength of women this week x Photos by @a_greener_hue #podcast #podcastsofinstagram #surfing #breastcancerawareness by @danielle.cass

HAVE YOU LISTENED TO THE BOARD WOMEN PODCAST? There’s almost 13,000 women on here, and whilst our podcast audience has got big, I know there must be a ton of you who haven’t listened yet. Maybe podcasts aren’t your thing. Maybe you found this community via some other route and didn’t even know we had one, but now is your time to check it out! We’ve got some amazing guests coming up - so go and subscribe (links in the profile) so you don’t miss it - or search Board Women in your favourite podcast platform. 🌊 Rhonda Harper - founder of @blackgirlssurf - absolutely epic human being and the first interview she’s done in a long time (and maybe her last) 🏄‍♀️ @danielle.cass began surfing at 52, but a year ago she received a breast cancer diagnosis, and she’s been surfing through her recovery, whilst supporting women from around the world to do the same - look out for her guest post interviewing some of these women & a panel we are going to do for breast cancer awareness month 🛹 Rachel and Aurore founders of the @keeprolling_co have spent years helping girls get into skateboarding via events, programmes and content all round the world - we caught up with them as they travel round Norway, and we’re excited to get them on 🏄‍♀️ lucyclarke_author of The Surf House, soon to be adapted into a Netflix series, who started surfing in her late 30’s and has written about encouraging others to do the same I get messages all the time saying that these episodes have incited women to take a risk, start one of these sports (or something else); and lean into finding their own joy - and that is quite frankly, what this is all about. If you love it (and many of you tell me you do), please do make sure you subscribe, give us a little cheeky share, and show the love - as more numbers means more brands partnering with us, means we can do so much more for this community x Thankyou x #podcast #podcastsofinstagram #podcastsforwomen by @danielle.cass
