Fiery South Rim sunset.
There are few things that compare to sunsets in the western part of the country, and though I’m not going back to Arizona, I will be heading to the west coast again in a week! I wish I was going for any other reason than Covid, but I will be making the most of it regardless!

I had been wanting a shot here for a couple of years, and it was top of my list when I started planning my three week road trip across the southwest. I also knew this was not a location I could just set up my camera and use a remote because someone could steal the camera and wasn’t sure a remote would even reach not knowing how far across it was. When @brianjohnsadventure joined me for part of that adventure, I told him a shot at this location was going to be a must if we did nothing else in that area. The evening we were there was so cold and windy, and I had to change into the dress out there on the ledge. There were a handful of photographers there that day that were probably aggravated I was in their shot, but this has happened to me at many locations too.
Most people who see shots like this have no idea the time and planning that goes into them! We had driven an hour to get here the day before to scout out the location and plan. Then had to get back out here early enough to get out there before anyone else, set up, hike out to the spot and change in time before the sun began to set.

I never dreamed I’d see thousands of monarch butterflies take flight.

This isn’t a perfect video. I chose not to bring heavy camera equipment. We only had one day to see the monarch migration, something that’s been on my bucket list for so many years. The day before we were at sea level, and then we traveled over four hours one way to reach the Mariposa Monarch Nature Preserve, followed by a hike at 9,300 feet just to reach the butterflies’ location. Peak season is January and February, and we were lucky enough to be there right at the peak. Every moment was worth it. Antonio, our guide with @getyourguide , was incredible.

I wasn’t even watching my phone when I recorded this. I was just standing there in awe as thousands of monarch butterflies took flight at once. I hope I get the chance to return one day and do a multi-day tour to see these incredible creatures again.

This moments is more than it appears…
The mute swans’ courtship is one of the most graceful displays in nature. Movements like these, mirroring each other, synchronized “ballets”, and gently curving their necks, are part of a bonding ritual that reinforces their connection. While often seen as symbols of love, this behavior is also instinctual, rooted in trust, timing, and survival. Even in a chaotic world, moments like this remind us how natural harmony can look when everything moves as it should. 🦢

Ferry rides in the fjords…
If you are ever in Odda, take the ferry, even if you don’t get off anywhere. The views alone are worth it, and there are countless waterfalls along the way.

If @siderhusetolak is open for the season, the food and wine are impeccable, so it’s worth planning a meal there! Your hotel can usually arrange a reservation for you, or book directly at www.olak.no.
