Hiking uphill for hours on end, to 4,400 meters elevation in the Andean mountains.. after a few hours I began feeling frustrated.

Legs tired, my backpack rubbing against the sun burn on my back, blisters on my feet, shortness of breath and physically exhausted. I start wondering if I can make it to the top. Doubting if my guide even knows what he’s doing.. am I safe out here? Passing small villages along the way until there’s longer sign of any people. Now only the odd horse, bull or donkey passing by.

I reach a point where I don’t think I can climb anymore, each step feeling more effortful than the last. Feeling a sense of hopefulness. When all of a sudden, I feel a shift, no longer focused on the pain in my legs, the panting of my breath or the fact that we are still a couple of hours from our site. I enter into a flow state.

I became aware that in these times of reaching mental and physical capacity, I could either stop and give up or I could tap into something deeper and keep going. I asked for support in that moment, I began communicating with the mountains, the spirits that reside inside (the Apus my guide had just been teaching me about.) I felt the spirit of the land working through me, giving me the strength to continue.

The final 2 hour incline began to feel like a slow, steady & effortless meditation. No longer in the mind or the body, but with the peace of the present moment, using my breath as an anchor.

I realised that this state of ease is often found on the other side of discomfort, the discomfort may still be there, but often if I persevere through it.. something shifts. It was a reminder that when I feel like I’m at my limit not to quit, first to check in to see if there’s something more in there. There usually is.

We reached the top and I started to sob.
The combination of pushing past the challenge and feeling the magic of the mountains was so moving it brought me to tears. We had made it to the highest point and I could finally let go.

We arrived at our Airbnb last night after around 35 hrs of travel to get here though thankfully no jet lag in sight. I think my body was running off pure joy & excitement to be here at this point. In awe of the house we had just arrived at - big open windows, furnished immaculately, surrounded by nature, spacious enough to fit a family of 6 and Bec and I had it to ourselves. There were just a few odd things we noticed.. like a dog in our backyard who wouldn’t stop barking, fresh unfolded towels thrown over the couches in the lounge room, no toilet paper provided and a sense that the place looked slightly different to the one we had booked. Nonetheless we were in heaven. We unpacked all of our items and set ourselves up at home for the next 4 days. I left my phone back in Aus after it was locked in our motel room before we flew out. But I was lucky enough to pickup another at the airport to get me by. I lay in bed about to go to sleep, about to switch my phone on airplane mode I give it one last check. I open it to a message from our Airbnb host - ‘just letting you know, you’re actually in the wrong house.’ Confused, a little disappointed but honestly unsurprised considering the events we had already encountered thus far in the trip. We accept the misunderstanding and decided to sleep on it to address in the morning.
It’s now morning time, 5am, and I’ve slept about 5 hours. The light shining in through my windows, the mountain views and the sound of the morning rooster make me decide getting up to seize the day is the better choice over forcing myself back to sleep. I walk out onto the verandah to do my morning practice. I take some deep breaths as my lungs fill with the fresh mountain air and calm, restful energy of the lands. Every time I look up at the mountains, I want to cry. How can something be so beautiful? The way they wrap around and tower over me, I feel so tiny & held. In this moment I’m reminded of why I travel. I feel inspired, like anything is possible. I’m reminded of the magic of life, the endless abundance and the slow mindful pace that is always available yet often forgotten. An ode to our first night in Peru 🌻⛰️ by @danielle_montagner

Celebrating 30 with a few drinks, good friends & a dance. The last 3 years I’ve barely touched a drop of alcohol and avoided busy night life at all costs. Some habits from that lifestyle were no longer serving me and so I stopped everything becoming a renunciate in many ways. I went into a phase of isolating and deep enquiry about life and self. Looking back, the person I was at times during that process was pretty rigid, denied herself of pleasure and thought she knew ‘the way’ (turns out I didn’t & there’s no one right way)
Stepping into 30s I feel like I’m at this place somewhere between the disciplined, hermit, hyper-aware, spiritual self I had found myself identifying as & this version of me that enjoys exploring all that this physical world offers and simply just living!!
I guess now I’m feeling somewhat balanced after living both extremities, and now finding my way at a healthy middle ground
Enjoying what’s considered ‘normal’ every now and then.. celebrating, enjoying some drinks, eating all of the indulgent food.. all without guilt
What a blessing to be walking this life, to be able to experience it all, figuring it out as I go, to love, to be loved & to feel gratitude in my heart x by @danielle_montagner
