Jin Sha: The Blue Veil
Opening Saturday 29 August, 5-7PM

REDBASE Art Sydney is proud to present our second solo exhibition with renowned gongbi artist Jin Sha. The exhibition coincides with our presentation of Jin Sha’s work at @sydneycontemporary

In “The Blue Veil”, Jin Sha paints the moment before the curtain opens, or just after it has begun to close. Working in gongbi — the meticulous fine-brush silk painting tradition — he quietly empties figures out of Renaissance masterpieces. He leaves only garments and accessories floating in what he calls this his liubai, the intended blank through which the viewer enters the work

It features paintings made specifically for Sydney, and it is the first time an Australian image has entered Jin Sha’s tribute to the masters. He has placed Sidney Nolan’s Ned Kelly — known as Australia’s own faceless figure, disguised in a helmet that has haunted the Australian imagination — into dialogue with Renaissance masters. In doing so, he unravels a greater, more nuanced conversation on the stretch of time and art history. This act of recontextualising art history into the Chinese context and tradition through gongbi complicates Australian mythmaking in a playful, yet inexplicable way

“Eastern Abstraction” — group exhibition at @redbaseau is open until August 19

my catalogue essay for the exhibition is available at the gallery (or via email)

Eastern Abstraction features Tian Longyu, Paul Bai, Sungmin Park, Li Kezheng, and Tifani Anggun

Abstraction emerging from Asia has a very different temporality than that of the West, and is still finding innovations through Eastern thought and aesthetics. To arrive at Eastern openings in abstraction, one must first reckon with the East–West binary that pervades the field and the ways painters navigate and disrupt these terms. Artists from Seoul to Yogyakarta, Beijing to Brisbane, occupy positions independent of these binaries, which artist Paul Bai has termed the Third Spatial Position. Here, abstraction becomes a living, in-between language taken in Redbase Art by @danielpressart

“Eastern Abstraction” — group exhibition at @redbaseau opens Friday, July 31, 5–7PM.
Opening remarks by Nicholas Tsoutas, independent curator and writer

Featuring Tian Longyu @longyutianlongyu, Paul Bai @paulbai_brisbane, Sungmin Park @sungmin_park_ice, Li Kezheng, and Tifani Anggun @tfanggun. Catalogue essay by @danielpressart

The practice of @sungmin_park_ice is devoted to hyperrealist oil painting, best known for the ongoing “Ice Capsule” series begun in 2002, in which flowers, vines and fruit appear suspended inside blocks of ice. Yet the ice he paints cannot exist; stems pass freely through solid forms, rendering impossible objects with photographic precision. Park uses the mutability of water — shifting between solid, liquid and gas — as a device to examine states of the in-between, memory, and the boundary between reality and illusion. More recently he has turned to the textures of ceramic surfaces, where abstraction arrives by pushing hyperrealism until it flows.

German artist @stephankaluza.art held his first solo exhibition in Australia last Saturday. The exhibition was officially opened by Klaus Wunderlich of the German Consulate in Australia @germanyinsydney, followed by an engaging Q&A between the artist and Jochen Gutsch @hinterlandt of @goetheinstitut_australien

His hyper-realistic oil paintings frequently depict rainforests as fading, vanishing motifs to signal nature’s looming demise. Here, the natural world is withdrawing from humanity to develop its own separate life amid its own collapse. The familiar themes surface: climate change, environmental exploitation, and the question of how, or whether, we can relearn to live alongside nature. Through his paintings, Kaluza states that humanity seems to have built its own bubble on this planet, looking down indifferently, sometimes arrogantly, on the forests it once came from.

Between 2024-2026, @meizhaoarts has produced over 40 landscape paintings that trace former sites of Chinese market gardens in the Northern Beaches, including sites in Manly Vale, Curl Curl, Brookvale, Palm Beach, and the Basin

In her new ceramic installation series, "Fishing Golden Snappers", Zhao also explores Chinese fish-drying businesses in Broken Bay from the 1850s to the late 1870s. Supported by original historical findings and practice-based research, Zhao's paintings and ceramics are coupled with historical writings
Exhibition held at @beachescouncil Curl Curl Creative Space
