Basketwall reinstallation co-curated by @rameymize and me at the Portland Museum of Art!

Featuring photography by @jaredlank
Ancestral tools and baskets from the Lank, Labrador, and Pictou Families, courtesy of Phil Lank and Barbara Boisvert
Baskets by Mary and Donald Sanipass, on loan from the Hudson Museum
Basket Gauge and “Grampie’s Knife” by David Lone Bear Sanipass, acquired by the PMA for the permanent collection.

This installation speaks to the migration of Mi’kmaq peoples across the imposed colonial border into our lands in northern Maine for the potato harvest and basket market and to collective resistance and the quiet safeguarding of our culture despite profound pressures of assimilation. This is a celebration. Seeing our history on the wall in an art museum, told by us and taught to children, heals my heart.

Thank you, Ramey, for bringing me in on the project. Thank you, Jared, Phil, and David, for your trust. Thank you, @aabbyylou and Jaclyn Sanipass, for all your support.

I am honored to have two of my faaaavorite photos be a part of this 25th anniversary exhibition. One of the photographs is a self portrait I made while figure modeling in a life drawing class at Waterfall Arts. This community arts center was my first introduction into the art scene in Maine upon returning home in 2023. They offered me a warm welcome and a safe space to push myself creatively. Thank you Amy and Ashley for bringing my work into conversation with @droseos, @sail4life8907, @jennyib, @moltenmud, @taramorin, @dylan_is_kiln_it, @glassgiora, @eleanor_anderson_studio, rbreaz, @mayatihtiyasart, @nolangerard, @mapachelento, @seanalonzoharris, @heychellisea, @internalheartdrive, @meghanbrady, @elizabethjabar, @kelp.elk, evwong.art , @observatorybelfast, @jordankendallparks.art, Janine Leffler and Jon Discatio.

I’m in good company :)

“Portals Into our Future” invites us to lean into our senses—to marvel, meditate, float, dream, revel, reflect, and commune—to meander from one artist’s universe to another—as they make visible the possibilities that live in the in-between spaces. The sovereignty of each particular voice, centering their individual creative power and striving to know themselves in the context of the world around them, is the heartbeat of why a community arts center like Waterfall Arts exists. It's the reason why supporting art and art-making are imperative in all times, but especially the difficult ones. If viewers allow themselves the opportunity to be present and attuned with the art, moved by the art, disrupted by the art, and changed by the art, they can see in themselves something that might not already exist. Built on a foundation of compassion, we hope these portals—these other intimate worlds that artists make—can bypass preconceived ideas and open spaces for empathy and transformation where other types of encounters may fail. @waterfallarts taken in Waterfall Arts by @danikahchartier
